This flood feting the <strong>Urbana<\/strong>-raised film critic and essayist more or less begins this weekend with <a title=\"LIFE ITSELF play dates :: Sundance Film Festival 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/filmguide.sundance.org\/film\/13883\/life_itself\" target=\"_blank\">the world premiere of <strong>LIFE ITSELF<\/strong><\/a>, an Ebert documentary portrait directed by <strong>Steve James<\/strong> (<strong>HOOP DREAMS, STEVIE<\/strong>) and produced by <strong>Chicago<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Kartemquin Films<\/strong> (<strong>THE INTERRUPTERS<\/strong>), at the <strong>Sundance Film Festival<\/strong> this <strong>Sunday, January 19<\/strong>. Numerous other projects have been announced and teased in recent months, particularly in interviews with widow <strong>Chaz Ebert<\/strong> leading up to Sundance, and now it\u2019s \u201cshow time\u201d on the home turf as an industrious young producer jumps into the flow with a related venture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Drafted during the final months of Ebert\u2019s life as a break from his voluminous output on recent movies and, well, life itself, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Thinking Molecules of Titan<\/strong><\/span> is an unfinished science-fiction story about research faculty and students who attempt to interpret a pattern shift in a man-made signal transmitted from <strong>Titan<\/strong>, the largest moon of <strong>Saturn<\/strong>. <a title=\"&quot;The Thinking Molecules of Titan&quot; by Roger Ebert :: The New Yorker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/books\/2013\/04\/the-thinking-molecules-of-titan-a-story-by-roger-ebert.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The New Yorker<\/strong><\/span> first published the fiction<\/a> right after its author\u2019s passing, after which Chaz Ebert <a title=\"&quot;The Thinking Molecules of Titan&quot; by Roger Ebert :: RogerEbert.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/chazs-blog\/molecules-of-titan\" target=\"_blank\">introduced it on the revamped <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>RogerEbert.com<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and launched a contest for readers to submit their own endings. <strong>Champaign<\/strong> based <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> and <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> alumnus <a title=\"Forced Perspective Entertainment :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forcedperspectiveentertainment.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Andrew Stengele<\/strong><\/a>, who works in the UIUC <strong>Mathematics<\/strong> department, saw an opportunity to retell the story with his own unique ending as a film, the famous journalist\u2019s bread-and-butter topic for decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"THE THINKING MOLECULES OF TITAN :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkingmoleculesoftitan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stengele adapted <strong>THE THINKING MOLECULES OF TITAN<\/strong><\/a> with <strong>Patrick Wang<\/strong>, the independent filmmaker behind the <a title=\"IN THE FAMILY review by Roger Ebert :: RogerEbert.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/in-the-family-2012\" target=\"_blank\">lauded, three-hour domestic drama <strong>IN THE FAMILY<\/strong><\/a> (2011) that played <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> last April just ahead of a belated DVD release.
