Winter has come and, dare we suggest, it\u2019s now on its way out? With the weather finally returning to regular double-digit highs above the teens, it\u2019s safe to once again venture out into the world without a vague fear of suffering frostbite. But, what is there to do in the Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> area to relieve that cabin fever, you might ask? You\u2019ve come to the right place for the answer!<\/p>\n

With Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> and our own New Art Film Festival<\/strong> quickly approaching, as well as the Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition<\/strong> gearing up, we have no shortage of cinema-related happenings in the C-U, but you should also consider attending the smaller, more esoteric offerings as well. For instance, the socialist film critic David Walsh<\/strong> is stopping at the University of Illinois<\/strong> to discuss The Sky Between the Leaves<\/strong><\/span>, published by Mehring Books<\/strong> in November. Sky<\/span> is a collection of film reviews, essays, and interviews written by Walsh between 1992 and 2012, much of it for the World Socialist Web Site<\/strong> where he serves as arts editor.<\/p>\n

One can glean Walsh\u2019s taste in films and their messages by examining this 2013 overview co-written with Joanne Laurier<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> for World Socialist. Number two in his personal \u201ctop ten\u201d list<\/span><\/a><\/span> is one of the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong>\u2019s most successful films of last year, NEBRASKA<\/strong>, directed by Alexander Payne<\/strong> and starring Bruce Dern<\/strong> and Will Forte<\/strong>. Other choices include GREAT EXPECTATIONS<\/strong> directed by Mike Newell<\/strong>, MUSEUM HOURS<\/strong> directed by Jem Cohen<\/strong>, CAPITAL<\/strong> directed by Costa-Gavras<\/strong>, THE WE AND THE I<\/strong> directed by Michel Gondry<\/strong>, and Jia Zhangke<\/strong>\u2019s A TOUCH OF SIN<\/strong>, which played the Art earlier this month. At first glance, they seem to align with the capitalist and working class issues central to Marxist thought.<\/p>\n

Walsh will be speaking tonight, Monday, February 24<\/strong>, in Room 126<\/strong> of the UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel St., Champaign<\/strong>, starting at 6 p.m<\/strong>. The event is being presented by International Youth and Students for Social Equality<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>.
