With the weather finally returning to regular double-digit highs above the teens, it\u2019s safe to once again venture out into the world without a vague fear of suffering frostbite. But, what is there to do in the <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> area to relieve that cabin fever, you might ask? You\u2019ve come to the right place for the answer!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> and our own <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong> quickly approaching, as well as the <strong>Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition<\/strong> gearing up, we have no shortage of cinema-related happenings in the C-U, but you should also consider attending the smaller, more esoteric offerings as well. For instance, the socialist film critic <strong>David Walsh<\/strong> is stopping at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> to discuss <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Sky Between the Leaves<\/strong><\/span>, published by <strong>Mehring Books<\/strong> in November. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sky<\/span> is a collection of film reviews, essays, and interviews written by Walsh between 1992 and 2012, much of it for the <strong>World Socialist Web Site<\/strong> where he serves as arts editor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One can glean Walsh\u2019s taste in films and their messages by <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"&quot;Best films of 2013&quot; by David Walsh and Joanne Laurier :: World Socialist Web Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2013\/12\/31\/best-d31.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">examining this 2013 overview co-written with <strong>Joanne Laurier<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> for World Socialist. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"&quot;Walsh's top 10 movies that played in theaters from 2013&quot; :: The Sky Between the Leaves :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.skybetweentheleaves.com\/walshs-top-movie-picks.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Number two in his personal \u201ctop ten\u201d list<\/span><\/a><\/span> is one of the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong>\u2019s most successful films of last year, <strong>NEBRASKA<\/strong>, directed by <strong>Alexander Payne<\/strong> and starring <strong>Bruce Dern<\/strong> and <strong>Will Forte<\/strong>. Other choices include <strong>GREAT EXPECTATIONS<\/strong> directed by <strong>Mike Newell<\/strong>, <strong>MUSEUM HOURS<\/strong> directed by <strong>Jem Cohen<\/strong>, <strong>CAPITAL<\/strong> directed by <strong>Costa-Gavras<\/strong>, <strong>THE WE AND THE I<\/strong> directed by <strong>Michel Gondry<\/strong>, and <strong>Jia Zhangke<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>A TOUCH OF SIN<\/strong>, which played the Art earlier this month. At first glance, they seem to align with the capitalist and working class issues central to Marxist thought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Walsh will be speaking tonight, <strong>Monday, February 24<\/strong>, in <strong>Room 126<\/strong> of the <strong>UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel St., Champaign<\/strong>, starting at <strong>6 p.m<\/strong>.
