Right now, we continue the serendipitous trend with <em>another<\/em> report about a timely happening almost fated to draw from a particular, peculiar past with a heavy sheen of <em>d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Beginning at <strong>1 p.m.<\/strong> tomorrow afternoon, <strong>Wednesday, March 5<\/strong>, <strong>Eastern Illinois University<\/strong> communications assistant professor <strong>David Gracon<\/strong> will host \u201c<strong>Cut &amp; Paste: EIU Zine Symposium<\/strong>,\u201d taking place in the <strong>Witters Conference Room<\/strong> (<strong>4440<\/strong>) of the school\u2019s <strong>Booth Library<\/strong>. The event will begin with a panel discussion about the history and politics of noncommercial self-publishing, followed by a make-it-yourself \u2018zine workshop at <strong>2:15 p.m.<\/strong> and screening at <strong>4 p.m.<\/strong> of the 1997 half-hour <strong>ZINED! A DOCUMENTARY<\/strong>, created by <strong>Portland, Oregon<\/strong>, media activist <strong>Marc Moscato<\/strong> while living in <strong>Buffalo, New York<\/strong>, during the height of the form\u2019s resurgence in the <strong>United States<\/strong>. <a title=\"Cut &amp; Paste: EIU Zine Symposium :: Booth Library, EIU\" href=\"http:\/\/booth.library.eiu.edu\/subjectsPlus\/subjects\/guide.php?subject=zines\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">All are free admission to the public and materials will be supplied for the workshop.<\/span><\/a> An accompanying publications display can be viewed on the third floor of Booth through <strong>Wednesday, March 12<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Participants in the symposium will include Dr. Gracon, a former \u2018zine publisher, filmmaker of <a title=\"HOUSE OF RECORDS :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/houseofrecords.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>WALLS OF SOUND: A LOOK INSIDE THE HOUSE OF RECORDS<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Hallways Microcinema @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/564445583638716\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Hallways Microcinema<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> steward; Dr. <strong>Robert S. Peterson<\/strong>, EIU professor of art history and a published author on comics and <em>manga<\/em>; <strong>Liz Mason<\/strong>, manager of the fabulous <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Quimby's Bookstore :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.quimbys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Quimby\u2019s Bookstore<\/strong> in <strong>Chicago<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> and <a title=\"Liz's Masonic Lodge :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/lizsmasoniclodge.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">publisher of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Caboose<\/span><\/strong> \u2018zine<\/span><\/a>; <strong>Lainie Duro<\/strong>, a self-professed \u201c<a title=\"Unruly Mom :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/unrulymom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">zinester, hack librarian, mother, and rabble rouser<\/span><\/a>\u201d from <strong>Austin, Texas<\/strong>; and your very own <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong> comrade-in-arms, <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong>. The panelists will talk about their personal experiences with consuming and\/or creating fanzines while also offering instruction during the workshop. Mason and Duro are scheduled to appear long-distance via <strong>Skype<\/strong> and conference call, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we\u2019ll elaborate in a follow-up post next week, this activity brings about a small flood of recollections beginning with the central involvement of Gracon, to whom your editor was introduced by Moscato through fashionable snail mail nearly 15 years ago.
