Stick with us for a few paragraphs as we introduce a new publishing kid on the <strong>Illinois<\/strong> block!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let\u2019s begin by recounting the primary topic of the <strong>Eastern Illinois University<\/strong> symposium <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"EIU symposium lets it ZINED! :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=7136\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">we posted about a few days ago<\/span><\/a><\/span>, curated by our friend <strong>David Gracon<\/strong> of <strong>Hallways Microcinema<\/strong>. During the various sections of \u201c<strong>Cut &amp; Paste<\/strong>,\u201d your humble editor, Gracon, and others waxed philosophic and historic about the \u2018zine, those self-published and non-commercial endeavors created by fringe voices with little or no (or stolen) means as a way to counter or circumvent the established media. In particular with \u2018zines intended as a vessel for personal expression or declaration, they are typically produced in such small numbers that one has to be wise as to how to find them in the first place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2018Zines are sold for cheap through the regular mail and Internet or left out for purchase or as free swag at record stores, comic shops, coffee houses, and other cultural spaces. Sometimes, \u2018zine creators play it coy and distribute feelers to attract attention instead of the actual product. Such was the case when we noticed a color flier tacked up on the bulletin board of downtown <strong>Urbana<\/strong>\u2019s <strong><a title=\"Flying Machine Coffee @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FlyingMachineCoffee\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Flying Machine Coffee<\/span><\/a>\/<a title=\"Pizza-M @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PizzaM\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pizza M<\/span><\/a><\/strong> that solicited material for an upcoming literary magazine called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Popcorn Farm<\/strong><\/span>. Unusually, the bent as proposed on the flier would be cinema-influenced writing in poetry and prose forms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The Popcorn Farm: Clean Zine issue 1 (Artwork: Rasma Haidri\/The Popcorn Farm)\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_popcornfarm_cover_no1mini.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog<\/strong> eventually made contact with editor-in-chief <strong>Jacob Cross<\/strong>, a recent <strong>Springfield<\/strong>-to-<strong>Chicagoland<\/strong> transplant, and received a look at their first two offerings: a 53-page PDF digital release of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Popcorn Farm<\/span>, Issue 1<\/strong>, and a quarter-size, 10-page <strong>\u201cClean Zine\u201d edition<\/strong> that is hand made. Issue 1 features an array of poems, essays, fiction, and visual art, while the physical \u2018zine is devoted to poetry; author biographies reveal these contributions come from all over the <strong>United States<\/strong>. Cross\u2019 team includes managing editor <strong>Kimberly Stout<\/strong>, marketing\/production director <strong>Tish Cunningham<\/strong>, and visual art director Hecker, whose artwork provides the cover image for Issue 1 as photography by <strong>Rasma Haidri<\/strong> graces the Clean Zine cover..<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Inklings on their <a title=\"The Popcorn Farm @ Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThePopcornFarm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"The Popcorn Farm @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ThePopcornFarm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/span><\/a> feeds imply they are accepting submissions for the second full issue. For comparison, we present this cut-and-paste example your editor discovered around the same time as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TPF<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Wes ANDERZINE @ Tumblr\" href=\"http:\/\/wesanderzine.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">a tribute to the films and eccentricities of <strong>Wes Anderson<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> titled \u2013 what else? \u2013 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Wes ANDERZINE<\/span><\/strong>. Precious to the core in affecting elements found in <strong>THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL<\/strong> director\u2019s work, <a title=\"Wes ANDERZINE issue 1 campaign :: Kickstarter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/398480737\/wes-anderzine\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the 150 copies of its first issue by Briton <strong>Owen Clements<\/strong> went quickly<\/span><\/a> and a 300-copy run of #2 is due this month.
