This is why, in honor of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Women's History Month resources :: The Library of Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/womenshistorymonth.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the national <strong>Women\u2019s History Month<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>, we bring your attention to the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Central Illinois Feminist Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/cifff.wikispaces.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Central Illinois Feminist Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> (CIFFF) taking place now through <strong>Thursday, March 20<\/strong>, at <a title=\"Eastern Illinois University :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Eastern Illinois University<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in <strong>Charleston<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now in its seventh year, CIFFF is presented by the EIU <strong>Women\u2019s Studies Program<\/strong> in March as part of the school\u2019s annual <strong>Women\u2019s History and Awareness Month<\/strong> (WHAM) programming. The festival is meant to promote the mission of Women\u2019s Studies and an understanding of how issues related to gender, age, race, economic status, sexual identity, and nationality affect women\u2019s lives and the communities in which they live. This year\u2019s WHAM theme is \u201cWo(men) in Nature and Nurture,\u201d and the curated feature films playing alongside festival submissions coincide with this theme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The CIFFF continues later this afternoon, <strong>Tuesday, March 18<\/strong>, with <strong>BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO<\/strong>, produced as well as written and directed by <strong>Jessica Oreck<\/strong>. It is Oreck\u2019s first feature-length film and is about <strong>Japan<\/strong>\u2019s love of insects. In the Director\u2019s Statement on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"BEETLE QUEEN SAVES TOKYO :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beetlequeen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the film\u2019s official Web site<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Oreck explains, \u201cIn making [this film] I am striking a new and unconventional approach to science education. My goal is to reach children and adults alike, and to help reframe their relationship with the natural world.\u201d The film, winner of \u201cBest Documentary\u201d at the <strong>East Oregon Film Festival<\/strong> in 2010, <strong><\/strong> plays today at <strong>3:30 p.m.<\/strong> in the <strong>Doudna Fine Arts Center Lecture Hall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"A luna moth in BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO (\u00a9 Myriapoo Productions\/Argot Pictures)\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_EIUfeminist_beetleA.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The second feature of CIFFF\u2019s Day Two is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"REFRIGERATOR MOTHERS :: POV on PBS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/refrigeratormothers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>REFRIGERATOR MOTHERS<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>, a documentary by <strong>David E. Simpson, J.J. Hanley<\/strong>, and <strong>Gordon Quinn<\/strong> produced through <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"REFRIGERATOR MOTHERS :: Kartemquin Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kartemquin.com\/films\/refrigerator-mothers\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Kartemquin Films<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> (<strong>STEVIE, LIFE ITSELF<\/strong>) of <strong>Chicago<\/strong>. It talks about the mothers of autistic children who faced discrimination from the 1950s through 1970s for the mistaken belief their own faulty parenting had caused the developmental disorder that their children suffered from. <strong>REFRIGERATOR<\/strong> will begin tonight at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> in the <strong>Coleman Hall Auditorium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Following this screening will be a roundtable discussion to address the multiple issues surrounding autism and its diagnosis and causes. The panelists will be <strong>Kristen Gharst<\/strong>, Family Resource Coordinator for the Autism Program of the <strong>Charleston Transitional Facility-Illinois<\/strong>; <strong>Dr. Gail Richard<\/strong>, chair of the <strong>CDS Department<\/strong>, future home of EIU\u2019s <strong>Autism Center<\/strong>; and <strong>Marjorie Hanft<\/strong>, instructor in the EIU <strong>Department of Psychology<\/strong> who has professional and personal experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On <strong>Wednesday, March 19<\/strong>, the festival will announce and then screen the winning films submitted by aspiring filmmakers and directors from all over the <strong>United States<\/strong> as well as <strong>Canada, Israel<\/strong>, and the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>. The CIFFF committee received more than 20 pieces on topics relating to gender and\/or social justice issues; films that link local and global issues; and films created by people underrepresented in the media field: women, people of color, queer\/transgender people, or people with disabilities. The film \u201c\u2026portrays the courage of several women veterans as they transition from active duty to their civilian lives.
