In recent years, digital technology has allowed area entrepreneurs like <strong>Sam Ambler<\/strong> and <strong>Matt HarsH, Garrick Nelson<\/strong>, and <strong>Jake Metz<\/strong> and <strong>Jack Maples<\/strong> to produce nifty low- to no-cost videos for their musician neighbors. Adventurous hands-on artists have also done it for themselves such as <strong>Chris Eitel<\/strong> (ex-<strong>Elsinore<\/strong>), <strong>Rick Valentin<\/strong> (<strong>Poster Children<\/strong>), and <strong>Lorene Anderson<\/strong> and <strong>Claire Cannon<\/strong> (<strong>The Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra<\/strong>). Yet, many <em>other<\/em> performers seemingly do not pursue videos, even in this portable Internet age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Decades ago, those not signed to record labels with healthy promotional budgets faced limited options on their own. Analog video simply did not provide aesthetically pleasing results while traditional film production could be a pricey affair. One wonders how many music video projects have never seen the light of day, their remnants stuffed in boxes and folders lining the attics and cabinets of our twin collegiate cities or elsewhere. It\u2019s an oddball subset of our creative media culture, to be sure<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Currently working musicians can decide for themselves if it would be worth the effort to make a music video as self-promotion or additional outlet for expression. However, your humble editor has wondered more than once if there would be interest in or a market for \u201cretro videos\u201d set to seminal songs culled from our scene\u2019s collective discography. Given the C-U\u2019s pervasive love affair with its own musical lineage and the recent popularity of \u201cflashback\u201d gigs stocked with reunited bands, such as \u201c<strong>1993 Revisited<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Play or Pose<\/strong>,\u201d our current filmmaker crop could have big fun visualizing the soundtrack of our former lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As telegraphed by the headline, somebody else <em>finally<\/em> hit on the notion and then acted upon it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><object width=\"450\" height=\"253\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_NfnXdXpjL0?hl=en_US&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"450\" height=\"253\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_NfnXdXpjL0?hl=en_US&amp;version=3\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">No sooner had we started pulling together <a title=\"IOW: Soon we can haz BAND? :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=7512\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">our post about the <strong>Bloomington<\/strong>-made indie feature <strong>WE HAD THIS BAND<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, with its themes of past triumphs and current regrets that so happen to revolve around the main characters\u2019 indie rock band, than social media lit up over a new music video set to a 15-year-old cut recorded by the former Urbana-based trio <strong>American Football<\/strong>. <strong>Polyvinyl Record Company<\/strong> of Champaign, which originally released the group\u2019s debut album <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American Football<\/span><\/strong> in 1999, <a title=\"&quot;American Football&quot; - Deluxe Edition :: Polyvinyl Record Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polyvinylrecords.com\/#product\/american_football_deluxe\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">put out a \u201cdeluxe reissue\u201d last month of the same<\/span><\/a> on CD, LP, and cassette, commissioning <a title=\"Chris Strong :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisstrong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Chicago<\/strong> photographer <strong>Chris Strong<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to create the clip as a bonus for fans. Inspired by his own image adorning the album jacket, Strong\u2019s gauzy video set to \u201c<strong>Never Meant<\/strong>\u201d imagines a failed summertime romance sparked during a house party. <a title=\"American Football &quot;Never Meant&quot; music video :: Polyvinyl Record Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polyvinylrecords.com\/#news\/1435\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The director spoke to <strong>NPR<\/strong> about invoking the Nineties<\/span><\/a> with his visual approach, every bit as timeless and fleeting as a 20-year-old\u2019s allnighter would be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well remembered in certain circles despite a brief existence at the dawn of the Millennium, with only the LP and one prior EP to their name, <a title=\"American Football @ Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/americanfootball.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">American Football<\/span><\/a> will resume play this September when they co-headline the 10th annual <strong>Pygmalion Music Festival<\/strong> in the C-U before visiting <strong>New York City<\/strong> to perform three shows in October.
