{"id":7593,"date":"2014-07-10T19:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T01:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=7593"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:46:42","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:46:42","slug":"article-du-c-u-ebertfest-14-pt-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=7593","title":{"rendered":"Article du C-U: Ebertfest &#8217;14, pt.1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cGoodbye \u2018Solo\u2019 (With a Little Help From Our Friends)\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter sending a battery of Confidential agents into the Ebertfest fold in April, we present their findings<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>by Jason Pankoke<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we touched on briefly in last fall\u2019s <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong> digest, your humble editor found a somewhat renewed sense of enjoyment out of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"Roger Ebert's Film Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ebertfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> when attending the 2013 edition even though it took place mere days after the passing of its founder, <a title=\"Roger Ebert :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the film critic and late-blooming social essayist <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (1942-2013). I had decided to not only be a willing face in the expectedly dumbstruck crowd, but also a slightly vulnerable soul in search of that big-screen transcendence only the best cinema can provide. I debated about recounting the occasion serially on <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong>, as we previously did for the 2001 and 2008 events, except that I did not know what to say regarding Ebert\u2019s passing. Omitting mention of it from anecdotes otherwise fleshing out my five trips to the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a title=\"The Virginia Theatre :: Champaign-Urbana Park District\" href=\"http:\/\/thevirginia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Virginia Theatre<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> would simply have registered as a cheat. I backed away from the end of the proverbial diving board and, as a result, no festival coverage of substance appeared here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fast forward 12 months and a 2014 \u201c<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>\u201d press pass arrived quietly in the mailbox of the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>, courtesy of the <a title=\"College of Media :: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\" href=\"http:\/\/media.illinois.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>College of Media<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, despite our failure to participate in the 2013 on-line conversation. Could we regain momentum in our Park Avenue presence? An entire year\u2019s worth of interrelated chatter \u2013 unending Ebert accolades from the international entertainment world, a relentless flow of Ebert-centric stories across all media, timely buzz generated by key announcements such as <strong>Champaign<\/strong> appearances by <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> heavyweights <strong>Oliver Stone<\/strong> and <strong>Spike Lee<\/strong> \u2013 simply would not allow the popular 16-year-old event to drift out of sight <em>or<\/em> mind. Therefore, plenty of overarching incentive existed for us to pull together something constructive for <strong>CUBlog<\/strong>. I soon realized this would be a great opportunity to call up several Confidential rookies and send them into the field of (photo) play on our editorial behalf.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unlike the analytical watermark reached by <strong>Anthony Zoubek<\/strong> in <a title=\"Article du C-U: Ebertfest X, pt.1 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=365\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">discussing Ebertfest 2008<\/span><\/a>, or the wide-ranging <em>mise-en-sc\u00e8ne<\/em> employed by yours truly in <a title=\"Article du C-U: Ebertfest \u201901, pt.1 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=3274\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">recalling Ebertfest 2001<\/span><\/a>, this tandem was tasked with placing their individual spins on individual shows in regards to what makes Ebertfest-at-the-Virginia unique. Although we will not file reports on all screenings or satellite happenings, we hope you will enjoy the variety of directions we\u2019ll take in characterizing the most recent Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival.
