The ultimate reward for some participants, of course, is to see their ideas translated into short-form cinema such as the 22 pieces that will be unveiled midday tomorrow, <strong>Saturday, August 9<\/strong>, at the <strong><a title=\"The Virginia Theatre :: Champaign Park District\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thevirginia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Virginia Theatre<\/span><\/a>, 203 W. Park Ave., Champaign<\/strong>. The P2L Web site <a title=\"Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition 2014 :: Offiical Site\" href=\"http:\/\/penstolens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">neatly addresses the goals and scope of the program<\/span><\/a>, with additions relating to the new batch sure to appear shortly. One concrete peek we can offer you is this teaser trailer during which a gaggle of colorfully myriad fragments flash before your eyeballs in 90 seconds flat:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><object width=\"450\" height=\"253\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vC5VJ6Bcg1Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"450\" height=\"253\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vC5VJ6Bcg1Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those who want to learn more about the P2L experience can hear from one of its organizers later tonight during <a title=\"C-U Pecha Kucha Night :: Champaign-Urbana Design Organization\" href=\"http:\/\/thecudo.org\/portfolio\/pechakucha-night\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<strong>Pecha Kucha Night, Vol. 16<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/a> at the <strong>Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, UIUC, 500 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana<\/strong>. This entertaining presentation format, introduced in <strong>Japan<\/strong> and sponsored locally by the <a title=\"Champaign-Urbana Design Organization :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/thecudo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Champaign-Urbana Design Organization<\/strong><\/a> (CUDO), features community members who volunteer to speak knowledgeably about topics that excite them. The challenge (or, gimmick) is they are allowed 20 seconds each for 20 total image slides to get their point across visually to the audience. With the direct involvement of CUDO in the P2L movie poster designs, it is no surprise that <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong> will appear at Pecha Kucha to discuss the value and growth of P2L less than 24 hours before show time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI directed one short, <strong>ZACK AND THE MOUNTAIN MAN<\/strong>, and co-directed two others, <strong>MR. SNUGGLES<\/strong> [with <strong>Andrew Gleason<\/strong> and <strong>Anna Zorn<\/strong>] and <strong>WATCH OUT FOR BUTTERFLIES<\/strong> [with <strong>Joe Taylor<\/strong>]. They each had something different about them that really spoke to me and my co-creators,\u201d <strong>CUBlog<\/strong> learns via e-mail from Nicol, who recently married the lovely <strong>Becky Griesheimer<\/strong> and also devotes time in various behind-the-scenes capacities to P2L, CUFS, and <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re super excited about how much the program has expanded this year \u2026 Students submitted even more scripts [that were] even better than the already wonderful work turned in last year, more filmmakers took on shorts, more designers took on posters, and everyone really upped their game to make this event fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nicol\u2019s penchant for the dark and weird in his personal film work is apparent in his P2L story choices. \u201c<strong>ZACK<\/strong> is a wonderfully odd script,\u201d he describes with more than a little kid-like glee. \u201cIf <strong>Roald Dahl<\/strong> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/strong><\/span>) and <strong>Wes Anderson<\/strong> (<strong>THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL<\/strong>) were fired at each other in a particle accelerator, this might be the result. It has an endearingly awkward sense of humor with a strong undercurrent of melancholy as these two lonely guys discover friendship for the first time.\u201d Conversely, <strong>MR. SNUGGLES<\/strong> concerns a boy named Tyler who is struggling to part ways with the eponymous stuffed animal he\u2019s known all his life. \u201cAt its heart, it\u2019s a story about how hard it can be to let go of childhood,\u201d says the filmmaker. \u201cAlso, a demon-bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Possibly more than the aforementioned shorts, <strong>WATCH OUT FOR BUTTERFLIES<\/strong> called for Nicol to employ a distinct effects technique he is best known for in the <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> crowd. \u201c<strong>BUTTERFLIES<\/strong> leapt out at Joe and me as the awesomely oddball brain-dump from the imaginations of a group of third graders that it is,\u201d Nicol explains. \u201cWith Joe\u2019s background in fabrication [honed at <strong>Taylor Studios<\/strong> in <strong>Rantoul<\/strong>] and my background in stop-motion animation [which he wrote about for <a title=\"Close calls haunt CUZine #5 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=3261\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Confidential<\/span> #5<\/strong><\/span><\/a>] we really felt there was a moral imperative to bring the koalaoctopus [in the script] to life.\u201d This is not <em>one bit<\/em> inspired, we\u2019re sure, by a certain monster movie franchise airing on a certain basic cable network that is produced by a certain B-movie legend. Still, we thank them in advance for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Consideration has already been poured into where Pens to Lens could go next. \u201cWe may have some things to announce at or after the Gala,\u201d confides Nicol when asked what lies ahead, \u201cbut for now I\u2019ll just say we\u2019re already talking about how to make next year even bigger and better, and we really can\u2019t wait to see what the kids come up with next!\u201d To remind, the \u201call ages\u201d block begins at<strong> 2 p.m.<\/strong> Saturday and features 12 shorts, while the \u201colder kids\u201d block starts at <strong>6 p.m.<\/strong> and will present the remaining 10 shorts. Admission is $8 per show or $12 for both; 19 and under get in free to be amazed and inspired.
