{"id":829,"date":"2009-06-09T00:26:22","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T06:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=829"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:57:24","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:57:24","slug":"jay-bennett-1963-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=829","title":{"rendered":"Jay Bennett, 1963-2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Personally, I did not know <strong>Jay Bennett<\/strong> except for a handful of brief encounters, harking all the way back to that fix-it job referenced in several of the on-line obituaries. I remember talking to this low-key hipster cat with the glasses and unbridled hair at <strong>Greg Danner<\/strong>\u2019s former electronics shop on <strong>Race Street<\/strong> in <strong>Urbana<\/strong>; suddenly, he had split to join that up-and-coming group called <strong>Wilco<\/strong>, apparently born out of older bands including something called <strong>Uncle Tupelo<\/strong>. The rest was history \u2013 at least, until the meltdown (selectively?) documented in <strong>I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART<\/strong>, when Bennett\u2019s relationship with his band mates bent a little too far in the wrong direction during the recording of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Yankee Hotel Foxtrot<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Is \u201cPuzzle Heart,\u201d the opening track on his subsequent collaboration with my former <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span><\/strong> co-worker <strong>Ed Burch<\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Palace at 4am (Part 1)<\/span><\/strong>, an artful\u00a0response to that particular break-up? Regardless, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Palace<\/span> remains one of my favorite records released this decade, and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Summerteeth<\/span><\/strong> is the one Wilco album in my stacks that I play on a regular basis due to the gorgeously swirling pop gumption introduced and engineered by Bennett.
