It turns out we\u2019re not <em>quite<\/em> finished gushing those sentiments, dearest readers! All day today, <strong>Saturday, October 18<\/strong>, is the fourth annual <strong>International Independent Video Store Day<\/strong>, or VSD, founded by the owners of <a title=\"Eyesore Cinema @ Tumblr\" href=\"http:\/\/eyesorecinema.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Eyesore Cinema<\/strong> in <strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as a would-be movement to rally around brick-and-mortar rental shops the world over. Let\u2019s tune out the mainstream rhetoric of a physical media industry on the brink and give our favorite Internet and video-on-demand services a rest, opting instead to engage in some neighborly conversation, meditative browsing, and unabashed localism with a trip to <strong>That\u2019s Rentertainment, 516 E. John St.<\/strong>, in <strong>Campustown<\/strong>. Let\u2019s be humbled such a resource has been available to this community for nearly 30 years, particularly if one has read any of the horror stories linked on <a title=\"International Independent Video Store Day :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.videostoreday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the official VSD site<\/span><\/a>, <a title=\"International Independent Video Store Day @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/International-Independent-Video-Store-Day\/344223360865\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, or <a title=\"International Independent Video Store Day @ Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VideoStoreDay\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> about mom-and-pop shops continuing to vanish, even in a <strong>Blockbuster Video<\/strong>-free era, thanks to indifferent consumers and big city gentrification. It will be interesting to see if VSD participants can collectively engineer any sort of qualitative revival as its obvious inspiration, the springtime <a title=\"Record Store Day :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.recordstoreday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Record Store Day<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, has helped do for independent music stores and labels. We also wonder how merchandising could eventually play a part outside of VSD-specific swag, considering no consumer video product that is still easy to play \u2013 Blu-ray, DVD, laserdisc, and VHS in particular \u2013 has the long-standing reputation, collectability, and hipster approval of the almighty vinyl LP, whether new <em>or<\/em> used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sure, we understand things change \u2013 or, as a wise <strong>Buggle<\/strong> once sang, \u201cWe can\u2019t rewind \/ We\u2019ve gone too far\u201d \u2013 yet we\u2019re honestly mystified over how instant touch-screen access to limited film collections is increasingly preferred by the modern consumer over the satisfying, tactile discovery of a title in the most unlikely reaches of the neighborhood home video emporium. Video Store Day is a good day to grow back that cinematic backbone, people of C-U, by checking out a selection or two from That\u2019s Rentertainment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Your humble editor is itching to throw down some Confidential magic during next year\u2019s VSD.
