As we push hard to deliver C-U Confidential #8<\/strong> to Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> as soon as possible, we\u2019re also sneaking in extra time on the blogosphere to play catch-up with relevant stories large and small. This one is pretty self-explanatory, so much so that we\u2019re sharing the official press release from CNN Films<\/strong> to help remind you that, two weeks from tonight on Sunday, January 4<\/strong>, sister company CNN<\/strong> will debut LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> on television at both 8<\/strong> and 10 p.m. CST<\/strong>, with repeats on Saturday, January 10<\/strong>, at the same times. (Past the jump, you can take in the uneasy mix of hard information, touchy-feely hyperbole, and corporate lingo at your leisure.) We\u2019ve also noted that merchant Web sites have begun listing Tuesday, February 17<\/strong>, as the street date for LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> on Blu-ray and DVD from Magnolia Home Entertainment<\/strong>, although specs and cover art are not yet available.<\/p>\n

CNN Films Global Television Premiere of Award-winning Filmmaker Steve James\u2019 Documentary Debuts Sunday, January 4, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. EST<\/em><\/p>\n

(December 2, 2014; accessed December 17, 2014<\/span><\/a><\/strong>) \u2013 Fresh from its highly successful theatrical exhibition, LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> will make its global television debut on CNN\/U.S.<\/strong> on Sunday, January 4<\/strong>, at 9<\/strong> and 11 p.m.<\/strong> Eastern<\/strong> [8 and 10 p.m. Central]. LIFE ITSELF<\/strong>, based upon the 2012 [sic] memoir of the same title written by legendary film critic Roger Ebert<\/strong>, was also honored today as Best Documentary by the National Board of Review<\/strong>. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival<\/strong> in Park City, Utah<\/strong>, in January and is in contention for an Oscar<\/strong> in the Best Documentary Feature category.<\/p>\n

The critically-acclaimed LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> is directed by award-winning filmmaker Steve James<\/strong>, produced by James and Zak Piper<\/strong> for Kartemquin Films<\/strong> and Garrett Basch<\/strong> for Film Rites<\/strong>, with executive producers Martin Scorsese, Steve Zaillian, Michael W. Ferro, Jr., Justine Nagan<\/strong>, and Gordon Quinn<\/strong> of Kartemquin, Kat White<\/strong> of KatLei Productions<\/strong>, Mark Mitten<\/strong>, and Vinnie Malhotra<\/strong> and Amy Entelis<\/strong> of CNN Films<\/strong>. LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> was distributed theatrically [in the United States] by Magnolia Pictures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI owe so much to Roger for his support and critical insights into my work over the years. We tried to make a film that would both capture his legacy and reveal his incredibly rich and surprising life,\u201d said director James.<\/p>\n

Revelatory about the movies, his childhood, his drinking, his love life, and his renowned rivalry with Chicago Tribune<\/strong><\/span> film critic Gene Siskel<\/strong>, a significant portion of LIFE ITSELF<\/strong> is told in Ebert\u2019s own voice, both native and synthesized, with frank candor and optimism \u2013 even as Ebert reckoned with his own mortality from the ravages of cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer love was like a wind, pushing me back from the grave,\u201d Roger Ebert says in the documentary about his deep, loving bond with his wife, Chaz Ebert<\/strong>. Both Eberts describe with great candor the origins of their meeting, their frank discussions about their interracial relationship, and the progression of his difficult illness.<\/p>\n

The professional relationship between Ebert and Siskel was complex and multilayered. Siskel\u2019s widow Marlene Iglitzen<\/strong> and television producer Thea Flaum<\/strong> tell stories behind the fierce competition between the two that vaulted both film critics to pop culture status.<\/p>\n

Many in the creative film arts whose work he fearlessly reviewed still have tremendous respect and enduring love for Ebert including director James, whose early documentary HOOP DREAMS<\/strong> (1994) was championed by Ebert. As testament, James secured contributions to his film about a film critic from a wide array of filmmakers, including interviews with Rahmin Bahrani, Ava DuVernay, Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, Gregory Nava<\/strong>, and Scorsese. In particular, recalling a difficult review about his 1986 film THE COLOR OF MONEY<\/strong>, Scorsese says it was \u201cdevastating \u2026 [but] that was a way of condemning \u2026 and helping.\u201d<\/p>\n
