We at <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> get a kick out of <a title=\"ZINED! of old is D.I.Y. zen today :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">witnessing these individuals cross paths<\/span><\/a>. As a timely example, who could foresee that a former member of a Midwest production company with long-term <strong>MF<\/strong> ties would be screening her own film publicly, <em>for the very first time<\/em>, in Champaign? <a title=\"Q&amp;A du C-U: Paul Karpenko :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Here comes that <em>d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu<\/em><\/span><\/a> all over again\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Apart from festivals and other special events, we typically do not cover specific picture shows in the schedule of the <strong>Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St., Champaign<\/strong>, but today we make an exception for the unorthodox choice of <strong>THE MANSON FAMILY<\/strong>. A key underground feature to emerge during the proliferation of specialty DVD labels in the mid-2000s, your humble editor has been waiting for a long time to see this fever dream concocted by outlaw filmmaker<strong> Jim VanBebber<\/strong> (<strong>DEADBEAT AT DAWN<\/strong>) and scraped together over 15 years beginning in the late Eighties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tonight at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong>, the Art will present a restored, high-definition <strong>MANSON<\/strong> brought out by <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>-based <a title=\"Severin Films :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.severin-films.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Severin Films<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in 2013 via limited theatrical release and a <a title=\"THE MANSON FAMILY Blu-ray :: Severin Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.severin-films.com\/shop\/the-manson-family-blu-ray-dvd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">widely available Blu-ray<\/span><\/a>. This marks the film\u2019s public debut in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>; the same can also be said for the short subject accompanying it titled <strong>FIVE<\/strong>, a creation of Art staff member <strong>Jessie Seitz<\/strong> who is currently attending the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong>. Coincidentally, this is <em>not<\/em> the first time her name will have reflected off the silver screen at the Art!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"THE MANSON FAMILY (Severin Films)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_jseitz_mansonposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"692\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A transplant from <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>, Seitz amassed post-production experience on the direct-to-video output of that city\u2019s <a title=\"Wicked Pixel Cinema :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/wickedpixel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Wicked Pixel Cinema<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and its founder <strong>Eric Stanze<\/strong>, who provided one of our very first interviews for <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> back in 1999. To begin, it\u2019s easily understood by <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> movie fans the <a title=\"The Art Theater Co-op :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arttheater.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong><\/span><\/a> prides itself in providing viewing opportunities of non-mainstream cinema, but it generally supersedes a large body of experimental and underground cinema. What did it take for the Art to unleash <strong>Ohio<\/strong> native <strong>Jim VanBebber<\/strong> and <strong>THE MANSON FAMILY<\/strong> on the C-U?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Jessie Seitz:<\/strong> The Art really <em>does<\/em> try to bring a mix of both underrepresented and classic films to our audience. That being said, there are certain fringe films for which the audience in C-U still needs to be built. <a title=\"Late Nights at the Art Theater Co-op @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArtLateNight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Late Nights at the Art<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has always been a great platform to present those types of films to the people who would appreciate them the most. The Late Night committee decided to show staff picks as a sort of \u201cend of the season\u201d thing. I chose<strong> THE MANSON FAMILY<\/strong> because of my connection to the director and I felt our Late Night regulars would really dig it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>In certain film circles, <strong>MANSON<\/strong> is legendary for the lengthy amount of time it took VanBebber and company to finish it and find its original distributor, his singular take on the <strong>Charles Manson<\/strong> cult, and his implicit criticism of the mainstream media. How do you think the film holds up today and compares in the past decade-plus of \u201ctorture porn\u201d and the deluge of horror cinema and television?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> <strong>MANSON<\/strong> absolutely holds up because it is a truly original piece of work. I feel it\u2019s unfortunate that it gets lumped into the whole \u201ctorture porn\u201d genre because that\u2019s not what the movie is about. With few exceptions, movies that focus on torture are only doing it for shock value and have very little to say. <strong>MANSON<\/strong> makes some pretty heavy social critiques and is presented in an artful, well-constructed manner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/60807294\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/60807294\">TMF Trailer 2013 RedBand<\/a><\/span> from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/severinfilms\">Severin Films<\/a><\/span> on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>Your film short featuring VanBebber, <strong>FIVE<\/strong>, will play after <strong>MANSON<\/strong> at the Art, apparently for its first-ever public showings. When did this project come about?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> <strong>FIVE<\/strong> was written in late 2006 and shot in July of 2007. The project came [about] after I had been working with <a title=\"Wicked Pixel Cinema :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/wickedpixel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Wicked Pixel Cinema<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and was wanting to branch out as a filmmaker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>Who were the other key personnel on the shoot besides yourself?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> <a title=\"FIVE @ IMDb.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2197768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The crew for <strong>FIVE<\/strong> was incredibly small<\/span><\/a> and I owe the success of the film to the cast who not only brought their best to the parts they were playing, but helped out with so much on set. <strong>Jess Dodson<\/strong>, who has a background in independent films herself, is the mother of <strong>Evie<\/strong>, the star of <strong>FIVE<\/strong>. Since Jess knew her way around a film set, she contributed so much support to everyone involved. She\u2019s really an amazing person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wrote the part of \u201cKenny\u201d with Jim in mind before I even knew him, knowing deep down that the movie wouldn\u2019t be as good if I couldn\u2019t cast him! We got in touch and just clicked as artists. I think he was into the fact that I wasn\u2019t casting him as a bad guy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>What overall background do you have in film production?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> I got my start producing and shooting behind-the-scenes content for DVDs, which quickly evolved into shooting a full-length documentary for the [Wicked Pixel] film <strong>DEADWOOD PARK<\/strong>. I was also the co-story writer, production designer, and a producer on that feature, so it\u2019s really the project I grew up on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>How do you see applying the art of film to your future endeavors?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been <a title=\"Jessie Seitz @ IMDb.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1442684\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">working in independent film since I was 18 years old<\/span><\/a> and have no intention of ever stopping! I\u2019m currently in production for a new documentary called <a title=\"ALT PORN IS DEAD @ Tumblr\" href=\"http:\/\/altpornisdead.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>ALT PORN IS DEAD<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which should be wrapped by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog:<\/strong> <em>Finally, as an employee of the Art, what have been the most interesting films or experiences you have had since joining them in 2013?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>JS:<\/strong> The best part of working at the Art is always getting to catch great films. <strong>IDA<\/strong>, <strong>BIRDMAN<\/strong>, and <strong>THE BABADOOK<\/strong> are among my favorites from last year.
