We\u2019d love to feign surprise and blush on cue but, considering that <a title=\"Love is a hop, skip, JUMP IN away :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8812\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">we already incriminated ourselves<\/span><\/a> in the refreshed quest to round up <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>\u2019s creative output from the past few months, we simply can\u2019t be surprised about missing the boat. So, dearest local music fans, here is the first entry of a handful expressing the variety in today\u2019s scene on <em>both<\/em> sides of the camera lens! Expect the brand new and slightly viewed to appear side by side\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/101733346\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/101733346\">Withershins &#8211; &#8220;Aquamarine&#8221;<\/a><\/span> from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/twobrainz\">@TWOBRAINZ<\/a><\/span> on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First is a \u201cday after the party\u201d scenario set to \u201c<strong>Aquamarine<\/strong>,\u201d a track by Champaign quintet <strong>Withershins<\/strong> from <a title=\"&quot;Mt. Fuji in Blue&quot; by Withershins :: Bandcamp.com\" href=\"http:\/\/withershins.bandcamp.com\/album\/mt-fuji-in-blue\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">their album <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Mt. Fuji in Blue<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a> released last August by <strong><a title=\"Heriship Records :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/heirshiprecords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Heirship Records<\/span><\/a>\/Mud Records<\/strong>. A slightly disheveled young woman (<strong>Ashley Haley<\/strong>) wakes up in the apartment loft aftermath of said party and makes a mad dash downstairs to her getaway vehicle without those all-important keys. On her round trip to reclaim said keys, she flashes back to the festivities including a live set by the group \u2013 <strong>Isaac Arms, Luke Bergkoetter, Bryce Robert Hays, Colin Larson<\/strong>, and <strong>Neil Yeager<\/strong> \u2013 before she can exhale a sigh of relief. (We\u2019re presuming some or all of this was shot at <strong>The Velvet Elvis<\/strong>, Arms\u2019 short-lived guerilla concert space in downtown Champaign. And, no, we\u2019re <em>still<\/em> not giving out the location on a public forum.) Another member of the family, charismatic rapper <strong>Klevah \u201cNinja\u201d Knox<\/strong>, recently dropped her sophomore full-length album <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Golden<\/strong><\/span> and has followed it with a steady stream of related videos. Two recent ones we share here: <strong>LOST LOVE<\/strong>, a concise piece filmed by TwoBrainz with music production by Rokmore, and <strong>BASTARDS<\/strong>, an iPhone collage assembled by <a title=\"Animol Filmz @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Animol-Filmz\/575015835932506\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Animol Filmz<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with <strong>Eric Surreal <\/strong>providing the audio mix. Certainly a case of contrasting aesthetics on super-low budgets, the slick in-studio feel of <strong>LOST LOVE<\/strong> and weathered C-U exteriors in <strong>BASTARDS<\/strong> equally compliment their respective sound tracks, a constant being the straight-up presence of Klevah and her lyrical flow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Students of media can have equal fun comparing the portable device vs. DSLR production values of <strong>BASTARDS<\/strong> and <strong>AQUAMARINE<\/strong> and how each uses editing and <em>verit\u00e9<\/em>-style camera work to reflect the women at their center.
