{"id":8866,"date":"2015-03-17T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T14:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8866"},"modified":"2015-03-15T19:12:33","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T01:12:33","slug":"eiu-feminist-fest-starts-march-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8866","title":{"rendered":"EIU Feminist Fest starts March 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>From March 11, 2015<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CENTRAL ILLINOIS FEMINIST FILM FESTIVAL AT EIU CELEBRATES COMING-OF-AGE FILMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CHARLESTON, IL (March 11, 2015)<\/strong> \u2013 The <strong>Central Illinois Feminist Film Festival<\/strong> (CIFFF) returns to the <strong>Eastern Illinois University<\/strong> campus in <strong>Charleston, IL<\/strong>, on <strong>March 23-25, 2015<\/strong>. Keeping with this year\u2019s theme of \u201cComing of Age and Sexuality,\u201d the schedule includes screenings of two compelling coming-of-age films and an afternoon devoted to films submitted by aspiring feminist directors and filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All of the film screenings and festival events will be held in <strong>Coleman Hall Auditorium, Room 1255<\/strong>, and are free to attend and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The festival kicks off <strong>Monday, March 23, 3 p.m.<\/strong>, with the screening of <strong>FISH TANK<\/strong> directed by <strong>Andrea Arnold<\/strong>. The 2009 film centers on a British working-class family who live in a housing project in <strong>Essex<\/strong>, east of <strong>London<\/strong>. When her alcoholic mother brings home a new boyfriend, Connor (<strong>Michael Fassbender<\/strong>), life turns from bad to worse for the film\u2019s 15-year-old protagonist, Mia (<strong>Kate Jarvis<\/strong>). Already failing at school and without many friends, sexual tensions soon grow between Connor and Mia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FISH TANK<\/strong> won the Jury Prize at the 2009 <strong>Cannes Film Festival<\/strong> and the 2010 <strong>British Academy Film and Television Arts<\/strong> (BAFTA) award for \u201cBest British Film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The festival continues <strong>Tuesday, March 24, 3:30 p.m.<\/strong>, with screenings of short films submitted by aspiring feminist filmmakers and directors from around the world. This year\u2019s call for submissions brought in more than 800 fictional and documentary films from 77 countries. The top three or four winning films from each category will be announced and screened for the audience. Award-winning films directed by students will also be screened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cFor this year\u2019s festival screening, fiction submissions far outnumber documentaries, so viewers can look forward to films ranging from animated shorts to thrillers,\u201d said <strong>Robin Murray<\/strong>, festival committee chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The final film screening will be held on <strong>Wednesday, March, 25, 3 p.m.<\/strong> Audience members will watch <strong>MOSQUITA Y MARI<\/strong>, a 2012 film directed by <strong>Aurora Guerrero<\/strong>. The film is a coming-of-age story about the tender friendship between two 15-year-old Chicanas, Yolanda (<strong>Fenessa Pineda<\/strong>) and Mari (<strong>Venecia Troncoso<\/strong>). Growing up in immigrant households in <strong>Huntington Park<\/strong> in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>, the girls have been taught to put family above all else. As the girls grow closer, they realize there is a deeper connection between them. Soon, pressures at home force them to choose between their family duties and their feelings for each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MOSQUITA Y MARI<\/strong> debuted at the 2012 <strong>Sundance film Festival<\/strong> in the \u201cNEXT &lt;=&gt;\u201d category and won the Audience Award for \u201cOutstanding First U.S. Dramatic Feature Film\u201d at <strong>Outfest<\/strong> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">CIFFF takes place each year in March during <strong>Women\u2019s History Awareness Month<\/strong> (WHAM!).
