While such pieces appear almost like clockwork in the local press \u2013 if you run a theater, drive-in, perennial film event, or persistent last-of-its-kind like a video store, you <em>will<\/em> get covered frequently in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> \u2013 we\u2019re always happy to see <strong>Geoff Merritt<\/strong> and his staff of \u201cRentertarians\u201d receive a friendly nod. Given the incessant reshaping and homogenizing of real estate adjacent to the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> this past decade, we need to pay lip service to the local business folk over the invasive national chains and congestive rental properties every chance we get.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The themes of embracing \u201cold school\u201d goods and services in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DI<\/span> article remind us of our promise to develop <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> material regarding film culture that is ignored if not simply unheralded. We hit on the idea back in January <a title=\"IOW: Thrill to the Skull &amp; \u2018Throne\u2019 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8699\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">when introducing you to the <strong>Austin, Texas<\/strong>, micro-label<\/span><\/a> <strong>Bleeding Skull! Video<\/strong>, founded last year by <strong>Joe Ziemba<\/strong> and <strong>Zack Carlson<\/strong> in cahoots with the\u00a0<strong>Alamo Drafthouse<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Mondo<\/strong> <strong>Video<\/strong>. (A third collaborator, <strong>Annie Choi<\/strong>, joins them in writing the <a title=\"Bleeding Skull! :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/bleedingskull.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bleeding Skull!<\/span><\/strong> Weblog<\/span><\/a>.) We still plan to chat them up in regards to their budding catalog of VHS wonders, which also includes the discovered-in-a-car-trunk (!) action opus <strong>RUN COYOTE RUN<\/strong> (1987) and the trash horror experience <strong>HEAVY METAL MASSACRE<\/strong> (1989), but this post will focus on another individual we had mentioned previously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Born and raised in Champaign, freelance videographer <strong>Samuel M. Oldham<\/strong> moved to <strong>California<\/strong> in the Seventies to pursue filmmaking, taking classes and accepting jobs to shore up his skills. Respectable tenures have included positions as an instructor at the <a title=\"Sherwood Oaks Film School :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sherwoodoakscollege.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Sherwood Oaks Film School<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> and director\/writer on television specials produced by <a title=\"Global Science Productions :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/globalscienceprods.wix.com\/globalscienceprods\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Global Science Productions<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of <strong>Beverly Hills<\/strong>, but the offerings at his personal <strong>YouTube<\/strong> channel paint a radically different picture. Oldham is an individualistic thinker and dreamer whose heart lies equally with classic cinema and what he calls \u201cpsychotronia;\u201d <a title=\"Samuel M. Oldham @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/SirSmoldham\/videos\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">how else does one explain a playlist<\/span><\/a> littered with custom footage captured at horror conventions, martial arts demonstrations, wrestling matches, and female bodybuilding competitions?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"DARK ROMANCES Volumes I &amp; II (Film Threat Video\/courtesy That's Rentertainment)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_smo_darkromances.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If we order <a title=\"Samuel M. Oldham @ IMDb.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0646159\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">his <strong>Internet Movie Database<\/strong> credits<\/span><\/a> into a cohesive timeline, we can identify a solid period between the Eighties and Nineties when Oldham tried his hand at narrative genre pictures including several early shot-on-video (SOV) efforts. We already pointed out his involvement as an editor on the flagship BS!V release, S&amp;M laced thriller <strong>CARDS OF DEATH<\/strong> (1986), but research has confirmed Oldham and his <strong>DEATH<\/strong> friends were also responsible for an underground title more familiar to backyard cinema fans, the fantasy anthology <strong>DARK ROMANCES<\/strong> (1991) starring \u201cscream queen\u201d <strong>Brinke Stevens<\/strong>. Other indie romps of note include Oldham\u2019s own martial arts adventure, <strong>THE MASTER DEMON<\/strong> (1991), and as a sound recordist on the \u201cagent of the Devil\u201d flick <strong>CATACLYSM<\/strong> (1980), one of three features edited into the oddball omnibus <strong>NIGHT TRAIN TO TERROR<\/strong> (1985) <a title=\"NIGHT TRAIN TO TERROR :: Vinegar Syndrome\" href=\"http:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/shop\/night-train-to-terror-bddvd-combo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">recently reissued by <strong>Vinegar Syndrome<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now it should be clear why we\u2019ve adorned this post with vintage packaging from the <strong>Film Threat Video<\/strong> release of <strong>DARK ROMANCES<\/strong>, illustrated by the late <strong>Dave Stevens<\/strong> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Rocketeer<\/strong><\/span> fame. Its rental stickers also hint as to how this prototypical SOV shocker has haunted us for so long, apart from foggy memories of house ads in the original <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Film Threat<\/strong><\/span> magazine, since we scanned the art from a copy that has been sitting in the VHS section of That\u2019s Rentertainment for ages. (You just <em>knew<\/em> TR would play a role in this recollection, didn\u2019t you, dearest readers?) Oldham co-edited <strong>ROMANCES<\/strong> with the film\u2019s main producer, <strong>Mark Shepard<\/strong>, along with co-directing two segments as well as co-writing and acting in one of the two, \u201cShe\u2019s Bad, She\u2019s Blonde, She\u2019s Lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BQy1HYv_YtM\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To give you an idea of what early SOV horror looks like, sneak a peek at Oldham&#8217;s rare promotional teaser for <strong>DARK ROMANCES<\/strong> that\u2019s a fun fit of showmanship. Essentially it is an extended trailer that provides a plentiful look at some of the tales in the four-hour-long (!!) anthology, flanked by a cheeky scene of Stevens\u2019 vampire character pitching an impressionable teenage lad on watching her movie as an alternative to safe and square Hollywood home video product. How <em>could<\/em> he resist?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Since he <em>is<\/em> prone to putting his money where his mouth is, even if it is just a dollar, your humble editor climbed up on his <strong>Video Throne<\/strong> a few months back and checked out <strong>DARK ROMANCES<\/strong>. While not his favorite slice of SOV pie by a long shot, particularly since the lengthy opening segment is such a catatonic slog, he found some enjoyable passages within and further amused himself by eyeballing <strong>CARDS OF DEATH<\/strong> connections. The only other <strong>ROMANCES<\/strong> release to date other than the original <strong>Film Threat Video<\/strong> set from 1993 was a pair of separately-sold VHS tapes issued by <strong>Sub Rosa Studios<\/strong> circa 1999-2000. <a title=\"Don't Blink! An Interview with Brinke Stevens :: Doomed Moviethon\" href=\"http:\/\/doomedmoviethon.com\/articles\/brinke_stevens.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In this undated interview with <strong>Richard Glenn Schmidt<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Doomed Moviethon<\/strong><\/span> Web site, star <strong>Brinke Stevens<\/strong> implies a digital release might be complicated due to the untimely passing of Shepard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> No time like press time to confirm that <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> does <em>not<\/em> have a monopoly on resurrecting decades-old film properties! Seems that original <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Film Threat<\/strong><\/span> head honcho <strong>Chris Gore<\/strong> has purchased back the rights after the title changed hands a few times over; <a title=\"Save Film Threat and Bring Back DVDuesday @ Kickstarter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/thatchrisgore\/save-film-threat-and-bring-back-dvduesday\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">this brand-new <strong>Kickstarter<\/strong> campaign to raise funds<\/span><\/a> for preserving and continuing its Internet incarnation, as well as bring back his former <strong>ATTACK OF THE SHOW!<\/strong> segment \u201cDVDuesday\u201d as a standalone Web program, is proof positive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.3<\/em> Oldham\u2019s first stab at a no-budget feature was an obscurity made in 1988 called <strong>TALES OF THE UNLIVING AND THE UNDEAD<\/strong>. It should not be confused with <strong>TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE<\/strong> (1987), an equally obscure no-budget item created by <strong>Chicago<\/strong> outsider artist <strong>Chester N. Turner<\/strong>, <a title=\"Fairy Tale Ending in the Horror Realm :: The New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/17\/movies\/chester-novell-turner-and-black-devil-doll-are-back.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">which has made headlines in recent year<\/span><\/a>s due to <a title=\"BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL\/TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE :: Massacre Video\" href=\"http:\/\/massacrevideo.com\/site\/shop\/black-devil-doll-from-helltales-from-the-quadead-zone-standard-dvd\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">its DVD re-release through <strong>Massacre Video<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and the on-line sale of a tape copy for more than $1,000.
