{"id":8932,"date":"2015-04-19T17:00:25","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T23:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8932"},"modified":"2015-04-19T17:18:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T23:18:15","slug":"iow-our-cup-once-freaketh-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8932","title":{"rendered":"IOW: Our cup once Freaketh over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To complete our week of connecting dots between the present day and our primordial motion picture past, when the <strong>Paper Opteryx<\/strong> had barely evolved from the <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> mire, we share this house ad from page 31 in the October 2000 program of <a title=\"IOW: When We Were Freaky :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=2355\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the final<strong> Freaky Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a> designed by our pal <strong>Ted Veatch<\/strong>. Shrouded in a darkness that can only be affected by dense ink on newsprint, the trophy pictured here never had a chance to become universally iconic like the <strong>Academy Award<\/strong> statuette or uniquely referential as is the \u201cGolden Thumb\u201d given to guests of <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>. However, in our minds and hearts, mad props have always gone out to ace artisan <strong>Michael Schwegmann<\/strong> for creating the hand built, one-of-a-kind tokens given to that last set of winning FFF filmmakers. The craftsmanship typifying Schwegmann\u2019s work today is certainly leaps and bounds classier than his crazy vessels with FFF co-founder <strong>Eric Fisher<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cFilm Guy\u201d poking its cartoony mug out the side, but we know those recipients absolutely <em>loved<\/em> inheriting works of art instead of assembly-line mantle fillers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_FFF2000_trophy_LG.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Freaky Film Festival 2000 program page (Design: The Incredible Teddy Veatch\/collection of the author)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_FFF2000_trophy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"582\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of all things local since the FFF folded after that year, <a title=\"Freek out at Freeky Creek Film Fest :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/smilepolitely.com\/arts\/freek_out_at_freeky_creek_film_fest\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the super-awesome custom cakes<\/span><\/a> designed by <strong>MeMe\u2019s Treat Boutique<\/strong> of <strong>St. Joseph<\/strong> for that <em>other<\/em> freakin\u2019 event, the <a title=\"Freeky Creek Short Film Festival @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FCSFF\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Freeky Creek Short Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, are the closest descendants. We don\u2019t know what exactly <strong>Joe Taylor<\/strong> and<strong> Bill Kephart<\/strong> bestow upon the Freeky Creek entrants who win their event\u2019s various audience awards but maybe, <em>just<\/em> maybe, MeMe owners <strong>Eric<\/strong> and <strong>Patty Woller<\/strong> could transfer their three-dimensional ghoulies from an edible to displayable form in the previous Schwegmann mold. If we\u2019re dreaming big in the weirdest way possible right now, please give us at least <em>that<\/em> pleasure on a dreary, drippy, post-\u201cEbertfest\u201d afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> As of December, Schwegmann and his wife <strong>Patty<\/strong> have moved their <strong>Schwegmann Studios<\/strong> (formerly <strong>Boneyard Pottery<\/strong>, as in the above promo) from its longtime <strong>Water St.<\/strong> location in central Champaign to a more private home\/work arrangement in the outskirts. <a title=\"Schwegmann Studios :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/schwegmannstudios.squarespace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">You can view examples of his remarkable pottery and her sleek jewelry creations here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> As of sometime recently, the Wollers have apparently rebranded as <a title=\"Vicious Collectibles :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.viciouscollectibles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Vicious Collectibles<\/strong> in <strong>Danville<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for which their main product is \u201chand sculpted, one-of-a-kind zombie cupcakes.\u201d A little yummy terror for your tummy, <em>or<\/em>, does <strong>Charles Band<\/strong> and <a title=\"Full Moon Direct :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fullmoondirect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Full Moon Features<\/strong><\/span><\/a> see the crossover possibility here?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.3<\/em> Our editorial in the almost-here <strong>C-U Confidential #8<\/strong> plays down the overall importance of awards to the festival goer or participant in determining worth based primarily on winning accolades. Some will not be in agreement, yet for our purposes in journalism and presentation we don\u2019t find them crucial. Our goal is to encapsulate the full canvas of work being done in <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond as best as possible, not doting on the brush strokes deemed the best quality or most pleasing. Enough judgment is passed in due course, year after year, when deciding the stories we run on <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> or pieces we play at the <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong>. That\u2019s our feeling on the matter, not necessarily yours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.4<\/em> That all said, the FFF cups are still <em>way<\/em> cooler than an &#8220;<strong>Oscar<\/strong>,&#8221; even 15 years later.
