{"id":9331,"date":"2015-09-12T17:00:45","date_gmt":"2015-09-12T23:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=9331"},"modified":"2015-09-12T17:15:48","modified_gmt":"2015-09-12T23:15:48","slug":"iow-films-inspire-chinese-rso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=9331","title":{"rendered":"IOW: Films inspire Chinese RSO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We admit it. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong><\/span> is predisposed to giving the student-run <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> (IFV) clan at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Illini Film Video meets Sept. 9, 10 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=9310\" target=\"_blank\">all the love<\/a><\/span>. (Can you believe their 20th anniversary is in a few short years, <strong>Michael Stone<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew McAllister<\/strong>?) Opposite their historical durability, many a video-making club or film appreciation group have vanished into the campus ether with relative ease, launched by well-meaning undergraduates who leave the barest of evidence behind. We <em>do<\/em> hope the members of a relatively new registered student organization (RSO) at UIUC can change that unfortunate pattern and build themselves a lasting presence as well as provide its participants a healthy alternative that can coexist alongside IFV!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Started in 2012 by dedicated international students with help from <strong>Kunyang He<\/strong>, an independent film director recently moved to <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> from <strong>China<\/strong>, and <strong>Michael Kozuchowski<\/strong>, then enrolled in the UI <strong>College of Liberal Arts and Sciences<\/strong> and president of IFV, the <strong>Chinese Independent Film Society<\/strong> (CIFS) is \u201cdedicated to screening independent films on social changes with local discussions and offering support of critical\/creative projects on [the] UIUC campus\u201d per their mission statement. Details gathered from their <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Chinese Independent Film Society :: U of I Connections\" href=\"https:\/\/illinois.collegiatelink.net\/organization\/CIFS\" target=\"_blank\">RSO Web page<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Chinese Independent Film Society @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UIUCCIFS\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and downloadable <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"PVC Movie Newsletter issues @ Box.com\" href=\"https:\/\/app.box.com\/s\/8t9x4iqlug86zqk2xp8s4kmc15t7nxub\" target=\"_blank\">PVC Movie Newsletter<\/a><\/strong><\/span> paint a picture of quite diligent members with camaraderie; activities have included hosting more than 30 film viewings and producing at least one documentary and narrative each per school year. The most recent piece, a 25-minute-long romantic drama called <strong>THE PEOPLE WE LOVE<\/strong> written and directed by He, was shown in the <strong>Armory 101<\/strong> lecture hall on <strong>Friday, September 4<\/strong>, to kick off their year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5-gxK4d1aHs?showinfo=0\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Understandably, much CIFS work seems to address issues of personal and cultural identity such as the process of adapting (or not) to life in the <strong>United States<\/strong> or the struggle to reconcile (or not) with changes affecting their families and communities at home. Click on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PVC Newsletter<\/span> graphic below and their most recent issue from March 2015 will pop open as a PDF. On the front page, you will easily find several live links to streaming video of the various projects including <strong>ON OVERSEAS CHINESE STUDENTS<\/strong>, in which UI students and staff compare their educational experiences in both countries, and <strong>FOUR UNIVERSITIES IN CHINA<\/strong>, subverting the \u201ccoming to <strong>America<\/strong>\u201d trope by interviewing native and international students about their studies at these institutions, all on Chinese soil. <strong>XU, A FACETIOUS CHINESE<\/strong> and <strong>XU\u2019S LITTLE LOVER<\/strong>, long-form comedies of error developed by He for CIFS in the vein of <strong>Woody Allen<\/strong>, can be <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Kunyang He @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCp1GsuEMgJ6vh33FF-prCWQ\" target=\"_blank\">accessed at his <strong>YouTube<\/strong> channel<\/a><\/span> along with the rest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Current students with Asian and Pacific heritage and an interest in movies should write CIFS at <strong>uiuccifs [at] gmail [dot] com<\/strong> for more information or to be placed on their Mailing List. Current students of all ethnic or cultural backgrounds might possibly take a cue from this collaborative Society in formulating their own through which to express their stories and concerns for camera. IFV would surely love some cinematic company in the otherwise highly crowded RSO field at the university.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> While little copy in their newsletters is written in English, particularly from the 2014-15 school year, you can find pictures scattered throughout of their filmmaking efforts as well as He\u2019s exceptional artwork of street scenes in China. \u201cVery pretty,\u201d says our humble editor of the latter in admiration and jealousy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> Do you realize <em>how proud<\/em> we are of CIFS for publishing 14 <em>newsletters<\/em> to date?
