Beginning today, we will share our immediate choices for the most interesting, offbeat, integral, and out-there public presentations as solo posts during the next four Fridays and then fold the sequence into <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Cinema Calendar :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?page_id=499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our weekly <strong>Calendar<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We\u2019d be remiss to not make note of the iconic <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"David Bowie :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davidbowie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Bowie<\/a><\/strong><\/span> who passed away on <strong>Sunday, January 10<\/strong>, at age 69, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Thanks, Starman: Why David Bowie Was the Greatest Rock Star Ever :: Rolling Stone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/thanks-starman-why-david-bowie-was-the-greatest-rock-star-ever-20160111?page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dampening the hearts of music, fashion, and movie fans worldwide<\/a><\/span>. Local theaters have since booked a pair of his fantasy features in remarkably short order \u2013 <em>thank you<\/em>, industry-mandated digital delivery \u2013 to recognize the malleable greatness of our \u201cZiggy Stardust\u201d now returned to the stars. <strong>The Normal Theater, 209 North St., Normal<\/strong>, will conjure the <strong>Jim Henson\/George Lucas<\/strong> collaboration <strong>LABYRINTH<\/strong> (1986) late tomorrow, <strong>Saturday, January 16, 10:30 p.m.<\/strong>, and again on <strong>Sunday, January 17, 1 p.m.<\/strong> The next day, <strong>Monday, January 18, 7:30 p.m.<\/strong>, the trippy consumerism parable directed by <strong>Nicholas Roeg<\/strong>, <strong>THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH<\/strong> (1976), will alight at the <strong>Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St., Champaign<\/strong>; their customers will also receive a chance in early February to dive into <strong>LABYRINTH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jyEV4Y2NnxM?showinfo=0\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As \u201cJareth the Goblin King\u201d in the youth-skewing <strong>LABYRINTH<\/strong> and alien \u201cThomas Jerome Newton\u201d in the slippery and cerebral <strong>EARTH<\/strong>, Bowie projects an unearthliness and sensuality to memorable effect, while the films themselves are striking archetypes of what constituted fantastical (and relatively analog) storytelling in their respective decades. Drenched with the distinctive visual sensibilities of Henson and Roeg, the productions offer innumerable delights worth experiencing on the big screen. <strong>EARTH<\/strong> holds added significance for yours truly as one of the first films I wrote about for a local publication, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Eight arms to hold you: an oral history of The Octopus :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/culture\/the_octopus_an_oral_history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in this case <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Octopus<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>, as a program note for \u201c<strong>The 1st Annual <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> Sci-fi Film Festival<\/strong>\u201d held at Urbana\u2019s <strong>Thunderbird Theater<\/strong> in June 1996.
