We celebrate with our next \u201c<strong>Flickers of the Week<\/strong>\u201d consisting of three wine-centric dramedies making up \u201cFermented Flicks,\u201d the latest themed film series to play the <strong>Virginia Theatre, 203 W. Park Ave., Champaign<\/strong>. On each of the consecutive nights, <strong>January 28-30<\/strong>, wine experts from nearby <strong>Farren\u2019s Pub &amp; Eatery<\/strong> will offer a different choice bottle for sale (along with samples, we presume) to audience members, who can enjoy one of the following cinema vintages while in the house: <strong>BOTTLE SHOCK<\/strong> (2008), a retelling of the \u201c<strong>Judgment of Paris<\/strong>\u201d blind wine taste test in 1976 starring <strong>Bill Pullman, Chris Pine<\/strong>, and the late <strong>Alan Rickman<\/strong> (Thursday, January 28), <strong>BIG NIGHT<\/strong> (1996), the story of immigrant brothers played by <strong>Tony Shalhoub<\/strong> and <strong>Stanley Tucci<\/strong> who prepare a grand feast at their Italian restaurant in 1950s <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> (Friday, January 29), and <strong>SIDEWAYS<\/strong> (2004), the tale of two college buddies (<strong>Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church<\/strong>) who attempt to stave off middle-age doldrums with a road trip to <strong>California<\/strong> wine country (Saturday, January 30). Shows will begin at <strong>7:30 p.m.<\/strong> and admission is <strong>$4<\/strong>. That said, we\u2019d like to salute the <strong>Champaign Park District<\/strong> staff member tasked with drumming up these groupings for his or her relatively creative efforts, in particular to differentiate them from the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>News-Gazette<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s once-a-month \u201cclassic <strong>Hollywood<\/strong>\u201d presentations. While both <strong>SIDEWAYS<\/strong> and <strong>BIG NIGHT<\/strong> rated as independent box-office hits and critical darlings when first released, <strong>BOTTLE SHOCK<\/strong> comes out of the blue, to us at the least; <strong>Google<\/strong> it for general impressions or, if you are of the <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> mind, take a look at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Case Study: Bottle Shock :: Film Independent\" href=\"http:\/\/www.filmindependent.org\/resources\/case-studies\/case-study-bottle-shock\/#.VqKIgFKrSJc\" target=\"_blank\">this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Film Independent<\/strong><\/span> \u201ccase study\u201d<\/a><\/span> on how its filmmakers managed to finance, produce, and distribute the picture. We found it informative as should any of our friends involved with recent <strong>Sleepy Creek Vineyards<\/strong> video shenanigans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Splashing visions of vineyards and <em>vino<\/em> on the Virginia\u2019s silver screen at this time might just be an act of programming providence. On the very same <strong>Friday, January 29<\/strong>, the <strong>UIUC Krannert Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong> in <strong>Urbana<\/strong> will host the ninth annual \u201c<strong>Tastings<\/strong>\u201d gala, presented by <strong>Art Mart<\/strong> and organized by the <strong>Orpheum Children\u2019s Science Museum<\/strong> as a fundraiser for the latter. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Tickets for Tastings: The Orpheum's 9th Annual Wine Gala presented by Art Mart :: Eventbrite\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/tastings-orpheums-9th-annual-wine-gala-presented-by-art-mart-tickets-20280837531\" target=\"_blank\">Proceeds from gala tickets<\/a><\/span>, auction bids, and (presumably) wine sales will go towards operating costs for the museum and upkeep for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Orpheum 100th, lore in spotlight :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8468\" target=\"_blank\">the 101-year-old<\/a> <\/span><strong>Orpheum Theatre<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Champaign<\/strong> where its attractions are housed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> Those readers who are enamored with this \u201c<strong>Reel Deals<\/strong>\u201d set in particular should get a cultural kick out of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TCM Wine Club :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/tcmwineclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201chome version\u201d<\/a><\/span> launched by <strong>Turner Classic Movies<\/strong> back in October.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.3<\/em> Interested in picking and pontificating over the \u201c<strong>Flicker of the Week<\/strong>\u201d for the C-U community?
