\nDISNEY ARTIST TO BUZZ URBANA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several entertainment celebrities have received overtures to visit our decidedly non-Hollywood prairie oasis as of late<\/em> \u2026 Per Variety<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>, organizers at Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> announced their first guest for the event\u2019s 18th edition will be fantasy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro<\/strong>, who will discuss his most recent theatrical release CRIMSON PEAK<\/strong> after it plays opening night on April 13<\/strong> \u2026 A prior \u201cEbertfest<\/strong>\u201d guest, acclaimed director Ang Lee<\/strong> (LIFE OF PI<\/strong>), will not attend a campus ceremony in May at which he was to receive an honorary degree from the University of Illinois<\/strong> alongside professors Ron Adrian<\/strong> (engineering, Arizona State U.<\/strong>), Edward Taylor<\/strong> (chemistry, Princeton U.<\/strong>), and Jagdish Sheth<\/strong> (marketing, Emory U.<\/strong>); a News-Gazette<\/strong><\/span> article<\/a><\/span> implies Lee, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree at UIUC in 1980, could be awarded down the line after missing this opportunity due to a film shoot \u2026 Earlier this month, the N-G<\/span> also reported<\/a><\/span> on the efforts in Danville<\/strong> to restore the childhood home of comedy actors Dick Van Dyke<\/strong> (MARY POPPINS<\/strong>) and Jerry Van Dyke<\/strong> (COACH<\/strong>); a representative is quoted about plans to turn the formerly condemned property into a \u201cfoundation for the performing arts\u201d for youth, with both a national fundraising campaign and personal appearance by Dick Van Dyke being planned to help attract support \u2026 While not a celebrity or veteran in the business, young Disney<\/strong> animator and USC<\/strong> graduate Ryan Gillis Lizama<\/strong> will visit Urbana<\/strong> to talk about his Sundance Film Festival<\/strong> selection PALM ROT<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on February 27<\/strong> when the thesis short will open the annual UIUC Insect Fear Film Festival<\/a><\/strong><\/span> at Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3 :: PLACES | STAR THEATRE UP FOR SALE;
\nCENTERBROOK DOWN WITH DIGITAL<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a literal case of one door closing (again), another door opening (again), and a third blown ajar by market forces<\/em> \u2026 In December, proprietor Jim Whitmore<\/strong> began posting on-line the sad news that his Star Theatre<\/strong> in Villa Grove<\/strong> had closed; after operating it for less than two years as a live entertainment venue, Whitmore is apparently selling the space even though we can\u2019t find any formal announcement, article, or realtor listing to verify. Previously known as the Gemini Cinema<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, Twin Cinema<\/strong>, and Gem Theatre<\/strong>, the Star first opened under that name in the 1920s to show movies and had served the same function for much of its existence \u2026 Conversely, the Danville Commercial-News<\/strong><\/span> ran a piece<\/a><\/span> in early January about the long-planned renovation of Hoopeston<\/strong>\u2019s Lorraine Theatre<\/strong>, alternately a first- and second-run venue that has been dormant since 2012. Members of the Save the Lorraine Foundation<\/strong>, who have been raising funds via grants, special events, and a temporary \u201cLittle Lorraine<\/strong>\u201d in their downtown, say it could resume operation by late 2016 to host plays, concerts, and films \u2026 Our columnist Tyler Tharpe<\/strong> is running an Indiegogo<\/strong> drive to drum up supplemental funds for the installation of digital projection at the 65-year-old Centerbrook Drive-in<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, located just south of Indianapolis<\/strong>, of which he is owner and operator. We\u2019re pretty sure that Tharpe would appreciate a few long-distance clicks at the \u201cGoing Digital!\u201d campaign page<\/a><\/span> even if he\u2019s relying mainly on his regular audience to help foot this inevitable expense; the Centerbrook is scheduled to open for the season with BATMAN V SUPERMAN<\/strong> on March 25<\/strong>. A random addendum brings spice to the movie life of Champaign, Urbana, and the cities beyond<\/em> \u2026 Having generated little theatrical steam last summer, bowed quietly on home formats<\/a><\/span> in November, and failed to receive any nominations<\/a><\/span> at this month\u2019s Academy Awards<\/strong>, Ebertfest 2015 selection THE END OF THE TOUR<\/strong> and its much-debated personification of the late David Foster Wallace<\/strong> will most likely have the book closed on it shortly. Visit this IndieWIRE<\/strong><\/span> post<\/a><\/span> to download and read a draft of Donald Marguiles<\/strong>\u2019 screenplay while it is still available \u2026 Men of C-U film Thomas Nicol<\/strong> and Andrew Stengele<\/strong> appeared on the recent Episode 87<\/a><\/span> of the Show & Tell CI<\/strong><\/span> podcast, produced by Mix 94.5 FM<\/strong>, during which they discussed with an unnamed host (!) this weekend\u2019s “48 hour film challenge” sponsored by Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> as well as the next Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition<\/strong>; the submission window for the latter is now open to area students \u2026 Speaking of C-U film, you will find no<\/em> personalities or projects featured regularly at CUBlog<\/span> <\/strong>on this list of viewing suggestions<\/a><\/span> offered by the UIUC news bureau at Christmastime; \u201cIllinois-related films [and television] shows\u201d refers to those involving university employees and alumni with only incidental nods to anything made in Illinois<\/strong>. It is still worth a look to identify the non-famous working in the industry today \u2026 Your humble editor\u2019s personal pick does not have to do with CUBlog<\/strong><\/span> territory but, then again, it might<\/a><\/span>: Kodak<\/strong> announced last month<\/a><\/span> it will manufacture its first Super 8 camera in decades.
