FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

We go off the beaten theatrical path in today\u2019s \u201cFOW<\/strong>,\u201d first to remind you a month remains for the “Time \/ Image<\/strong>” show at the UIUC Krannert Art Museum<\/strong> in Champaign<\/strong> that we wrote about, due to its inclusion of video installations<\/a><\/span>, and then to share brief details about two other comparable shows within driving distance. On display at the University Galleries<\/strong> of the College of Fine Arts, Illinois State University, Normal<\/strong>, is a survey of a dozen pieces by ISU alumnus Terry Adkins<\/strong> (1953-2014) called “Soldier Shepherd Prophet Martyr: Videos from 1998-2013<\/strong>” running through Sun., Apr. 3<\/strong>. The exhibition notes describe the output<\/a><\/span> of musician and multimedia artist Adkins as \u201ccommanding works about revolutionary spirits who triumphed over adversity and effected meaningful change\u201d including heralded individuals like John Brown<\/strong> and Bessie Smith<\/strong> as well as obscure figures like Arctic<\/strong> explorer Matthew Henson<\/strong>. A bit more time remains to visit the Art Institute of Chicago<\/strong> and experience the trio of slide projection pieces making up “Dennis Oppenheim: Projections<\/strong>,” on display in Gallery 186<\/strong> until Mon., May 30<\/strong>. Hailing from the early 1970s, they \u201cused performances for the camera to explore the theme of mourning and to model an intergenerational transfer of psychic or creative energies\u201d per the Institute, apparently breaking new ground<\/a><\/span> for the versatile Oppenheim (1938-2011) who also experimented with video in the same decade.<\/p>\n
