15 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Friday, April 20, 2001:<\/em> Downtown Champaign<\/strong> establishments are adorned with the work of local artists for The Octopus<\/span> Gallery Walk<\/strong>, a precursor to the Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong>. Hosted by Southlynn Studios<\/strong> in the Octopus<\/span> office space is a unique exhibit called \u201cZineophilia<\/strong>,\u201d featuring paintings and mixed media pieces from the pages of The Ides of March<\/span><\/strong> as well as a table adorned with dozens of ‘zines for visitors to browse. Homegrown efforts include low hug<\/strong><\/span> by A.j. Michel<\/strong>, Silly Little Trouser Monkees<\/strong><\/span> by Brad Bugos<\/strong>, the aforementioned Ides<\/span> by Dann Tincher<\/strong> and Damian Duffy<\/strong>, and our own flagship mag, MICRO-FILM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

15 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Saturday, April 21, 2001:<\/em> Less than 24 hours later at The Highdive<\/strong>, located across Main Street<\/strong> from the Lincoln Building<\/strong> where \u201cZineophilia\u201d reigned, Mr. JaPan<\/strong> emcees his first-ever film show. Dubbed \u201cMICRO-FILM V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/strong>,\u201d the \u201cofficial programme\u201d is comprised of eclectic low-budget cinema from near and far. Local selections include student shorts from the University of Illinois<\/strong> and Illinois State University<\/strong>, the early Mike Trippiedi<\/strong> \u201cslasher in rhyme\u201d BUCKY McSNEAD<\/strong>, and a trailer for Hart D. Fisher<\/strong>\u2019s THE GARBAGE MAN<\/strong>. Filmmakers from across the nation, such as Cory McAbee<\/strong> (THE MAN ON THE MOON<\/strong>), Jim Sikora<\/strong> (STAGEFRIGHT CHAMELEON<\/strong>), Rusty Nails<\/strong> (SANTIAGO VS. WIGFACE<\/strong>), and Mike White<\/strong> (WHO DO YOU THINK YOU\u2019RE FOOLING?<\/strong>), also represent.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re taking the path of least critical resistance this week, gang. Whatever floats your<\/em> individual boats will suffice nicely as \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d material. Except<\/em> if it\u2019s not the 2016 Asian Film Festival<\/strong> that is playing the Normal Theater<\/strong> in Normal<\/strong> from now to Sun., Apr. 17<\/strong>, because we miss attending the comparable showcases of modern filmmaking from China, Korea, Japan<\/strong>, et al<\/em>., once offered in Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>. Or<\/em> the 2016 Arts Tech Film Fest<\/strong>, also at the Normal between Tues., Apr. 19<\/strong>, and Sun., Apr. 24<\/strong>, since its thematic focus on human coexistence with computers and artificial intelligence reminds us of Cyberfest \u201997<\/strong>, the UIUC sponsored event directly inspiring the launch of Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>.
