10 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Saturday, April 22, 2006:<\/em> The University of Illinois<\/strong> students of Illini Film & Video<\/strong> premiere their feature length horror-comedy, THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS VS. A MUMMY<\/strong>. Involving dozens of undergraduates and taking the better part of two academic years to finish, MUMMY<\/strong> plays at 7<\/strong> and 9 p.m.<\/strong> in the lecture auditorium of Noyes Laboratory<\/strong> on the UI Main Quad<\/strong>, with an encore set for the following afternoon at the UI Spurlock Museum<\/strong> a few blocks away. The prerequisite DVD of this project, envisioned by IFV president Chris Lukeman<\/strong> as a way to encourage club members to work together as a team and try out multiple roles on a single production, would debut the next month and become a long-standing ice breaker for incoming freshmen unfamiliar with the group. In recent years, MUMMY<\/strong> has been in permanent late-night rotation on UI-7<\/strong>, the broadcasting service of the university. As reported on 4\/15\/06, 4\/21\/06, 5\/14\/06 at <\/em>CUBlog<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n

10 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Sunday, April 23, 2006:<\/em> BrainSmart Productions<\/strong>, a townie collective led by lo-fi filmmakers Jason Butler<\/strong> and Mark Peaslee<\/strong>, unleashes \u201cEpisode 2\u201d of their action-filled B-movie WEREWOLF CEMETERY<\/strong>. The program introducing this newest creation also features \u201cEpisode 1\u201d of the \u201cgravediggers vs. lycanthropes vs. normal folk from the big city\u201d epic, the first installment of smaller-scale series THE ADVENTURES OF THE SCREAMING APE<\/strong>, and a music video for \u201cSerrated Edge<\/strong>\u201d by The Living Blue<\/strong>, playing both this night and the next at the stroke of midnight in the beer garden of Mike \u2018n Molly\u2019s<\/strong> in downtown Champaign. Four segments total of WEREWOLF<\/strong> would eventually be made by Butler and company, although one must be tight with participants to access the full episodes as they have never been formally released on home video or uploaded for on-line streaming. This is about as underground as it gets with the films of Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>! As reported on 4\/15\/06, 4\/22\/16 at <\/em>CUBlog<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n

FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emerging from this flashback haze filling MFHQ<\/strong> as of late, a couple of items have caught our eye and therefore become \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d for today! We receive another opportunity to watch contemporary Asian cinema with an audience on Mon., Apr. 25<\/strong>, at the UI Spurlock Museum\u2019s Knight Auditorium<\/strong>, and Tues., Apr. 26<\/strong>, at UI Unit One\/Allen Hall<\/strong>\u2019s Main Lounge<\/strong> \u2013 both in Urbana<\/strong> and beginning at 7 p.m.<\/strong> \u2013 when South Korean actress and filmmaker Pang Eun-jin<\/strong> is welcomed to campus. She will introduce and discuss the wrongful imprisonment drama WAY BACK HOME<\/strong> (2013) on Mon. and the murder plot thriller PERFECT NUMBER<\/strong> (2012) on Tues. during a visit sponsored by the UI Center for Advanced Study<\/strong> and other departments. Elsewhere, the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> is offering one of their patented smorgasbord schedules in which everything<\/em> looks good, although the title intriguing us most is VITA ACTIVA: THE SPIRIT OF HANNAH ARENDT<\/strong> (Zeitgeist Films<\/strong>) from the acclaimed filmmaker Ada Ushpiz<\/strong>. This documentary is an engrossing look at the life and idiosyncratic leanings of the German-born Jewish theorist whose controversial views on mid-20th century politics and society fueled such written works as The Human Condition<\/strong><\/span> (1958), which she preferred to call Vita Activa<\/strong><\/em><\/span> or \u201cThe Active Life.\u201d<\/p>\n
