10 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Monday, May 1, 2006:<\/em> Comedian and television writer Mark Roberts<\/strong>, a native of nearby Tolono<\/strong> and former resident of Urbana<\/strong>, begins production this week on his self-financed film WELCOME TO TOLONO<\/strong>. Based on the same-named play, written and directed by Roberts as an \u201cartist-in-residence\u201d production at the Station Theatre<\/strong> in Urbana the previous summer, TOLONO<\/strong> is filmed during a five-week schedule in its small town namesake. Much of the original stage cast appears including Brian Reedy, Mike Trippiedi, David Butler, Kay Bohannon Holley, Gary Ambler<\/strong>, and Barbara Evans<\/strong>, who are joined in this screen adaptation by Mike Harvey, Colleen Klein, Joi Hoffsommer, Anne Shapland Kearns<\/strong>, and Rien Rogers<\/strong>. A premiere of the darkly humorous drama, concerning disparate individuals who attend a weekly support group in the basement of a local church, would take place at the University of Illinois<\/strong>\u2019 Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong> in June 2007 after which it played a smattering of regional festivals. Not unlike WEREWOLF CEMETERY<\/strong> discussed in last week\u2019s Calendar<\/strong>, TOLONO<\/strong> has yet to be issued on consumer formats or via streaming. Watch for a preview to appear tomorrow on CUBlog<\/strong><\/span> about the Kimberly Conner<\/strong> production, BEFORE \u2018I DO,\u2019<\/strong> set for its first public screening at 7 p.m.<\/strong> the same night, Sat., Apr. 30<\/strong>, at the Hoogland Center for the Arts<\/strong> in Springfield<\/strong>. Conner, whose previous efforts THIS LIFE AIN\u2019T PRETTY<\/strong> and JUMP IN<\/strong> have been covered on this forum, lives and works in the Capital City as well as channels her extra energies into a burgeoning cinema career of which \u2018I DO\u2019<\/strong> is the latest example. Act fast if you would like to attend the premiere at Hoogland; less than 40 seats remain for the show according to a Facebook<\/strong> update from Conner posted yesterday. We\u2019d also highly suggest STRANGE VICTORY<\/strong> (Milestone Film<\/strong>), a documentary-essay from 1948 directed by Leo Hurwitz<\/strong> that bravely holds the United States<\/strong> to task for racist and anti-Semitic tendencies in the wake of World War II<\/strong>; it plays a single show at the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> on Mon., May 2<\/strong>, at 7:30 p.m.<\/strong> Tickets for \u2018I DO\u2019<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
