MILESTONES

Happy Birthday toTuesday, June 28: Gladys Kephart (actress, ZACK AND THE MOUNTAIN MAN, Pens to Lens 2014) … Thursday, June 30: Andrea Aarons (future cover model, C-U Confidential) … celebrate!

PassingsThursday, June 16: Trevor Alan Taylor, 34 (employee, Boardman’s Art Theatre/crew member, WELCOME TO TOLONO, ACT YOUR AGE) … you will be missed.

20 Years AgoJune 14-27, 1996: After celebrating a grand opening in March and establishing a business model of serving alcohol and pizza with second-run Hollywood fare, the operators of the Brew & View at the Thunderbird team with The Octopus alternative weekly to develop signature events. Their inaugural show, “The 1st Annual Octopus Sci Fi Film Festival,” presents several science fiction classics and favorites across a two-week summer stretch at Urbana’s Thunderbird Theater, touted in its previous first-run era as having the largest movie screen in Champaign-Urbana. Selected by Octopus publisher Paul Young with assistance from his staff, including future New Art Film Festival program director Jason Pankoke, the marathon pairs episodes from the 1940 serial incarnation of pulp hero “The Shadow” with a choice roster: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951), DR. STRANGELOVE, INVADERS FROM MARS (1953), THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, THE ROAD WARRIOR, THE TERMINATOR, and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953). All films are projected from 35 and 16 mm prints rented through various agencies from all over the United States. Similar shows of a more esoteric bent would follow the well-received “Sci Fi” experience over the next year, ceasing in mid-1997 after the Brew & View’s closure.

FLICKER OF THE WEEK

In the spirit of our Confidential Almanac entry above, we shine the “FOW” seal into the night skies above the Art Theater Co-op to mark the not-very-secret location of “Big Screen Noir,” a new retrospect series beginning on Fri., 7/1. Six vintage and contemporary hallmarks in the genre will provide audiences a sampling of the storytelling form over a two month period: THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (starting 7/1) with Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles, the latter directing; THE KILLING (1956; starting 7/8) with Sterling Hayden and directed by Stanley Kubrick; CAPE FEAR (1962; starting 7/28) with Robert Mitchum and directed by J. Lee Thompson; KISS ME DEADLY (1955; starting 8/5) starring Ralph Meeker and directed by Robert Aldrich; DOG DAY AFTERNOON (starting 8/26) with Al Pacino and directed by Sidney Lumet; and THE BIG LEBOWSKI (starting 9/2) with Jeff Bridges and directed by Joel Coen. The Art is offering a $36 festival pass exclusively through their Web site that will save you $2 per film ticket as well as award the bearer a free small popcorn at each show. If you have ever picked up our C-U Confidential digest, you know we are fans of this milieu and pretty much fated to recommend it!
