FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts

After the conclusion of another successful New Art Film Festival, an extended Halloween weekend, and a gloriously epic win by the Chicago Cubs over the Cleveland Indians to seal their first World Series championship since 1908, the only other things we could possibly want this week at the Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters are rest and a big mound of peace and happiness. Therefore, we cross our fingers in the faint hope the makers of animated comedy TROLLS (DreamWorks/20th Century Fox), opening nationwide today, Fri., 11/4, were savvy enough to incorporate the only tuft-haired member of their tribe who could possibly satisfy our needs in contrast to the precocious and generic ones appearing in the ad campaign – Tiny Tim troll, an actual variation on the collectible dolls of Danish origin that was based on the late novelty singer of THE TONIGHT SHOW and “Tip-Toe Thru’ the Tulips With Me” infamy. All other mainstream concessions in the candy-colored adventure, featuring voice work by Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, and Russell Brand, can be (nearly) forgiven if that doe-eyed, dark-haired creature would cameo with his ukulele and otherworldly flower-power falsetto. We’re not sure if we’d be willing to fork over first-run prices to find out, however, so let’s instead consider the quiet contemplation of the newest Kelly Reichardt drama, CERTAIN WOMEN (IFC Films), starring Kristin Stewart, Laura Dern, and Michelle Williams, or the loud legacy wrought by Iggy Pop and The Stooges in the documentary GIMME DANGER (Magnolia Pictures/Amazon Studios) directed by Jim Jarmusch; both start week-long runs at the Art Theater Co-op today. If letting the idiocy loose pre-Election Day is what you need, check out the too-timely revival of IDIOCRACY (20th Century Fox) later tonight at either the Lincoln Square Theatre in Decatur at 8 p.m. or the Normal Theater in Normal at 10:30 p.m. This live-action satire from KING OF THE HILL co-creator Mike Judge bombed in its 2006 theatrical run but, not unlike its protagonist played by Luke Wilson, reawakens in a future of head-scratching cerebral attrition; Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepherd, and Terry Crews co-star. “FOW” is hereby fin.
