CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History

20 Years AgoMay 12, 1999: A tongue-in-cheek look at Greek life as exemplified by the system at the University of Illinois, WHATEVER! IT’S A WONDERFUL SORORITY LIFE, is broadcast on PBS stations across the United States for the first time. This half-hour exposé by first-time filmmaker John Chua emphasizes humor in its attempt to picture how a powerful social organization for young women can seemingly choose at will to be exclusive and secretive. Various interviewees who are identified only by their first names dish about the practices held sacred within sorority walls while an African-American undergraduate, Ajana, goes through the “rush” process to see if she can qualify for a “bid” from one or more houses. The surprise distribution of WHATEVER! to PBS affiliates for non-prime time play, arranged in large part by the NAATA (currently the Center for Asian American Media), follows a handful of regional broadcasts including on Chicago’s WTTW Channel 11 in January 1998 and Urbana’s WILL Channel 12 in the fall of 1997. WHATEVER! is another independent documentary made in recent years like IN WHOSE HONOR? to rile up segments of the UI community by critiquing and criticizing aspects of its campus culture; panel discussions open to the public involving Chua, field producer Edward Burch, faculty members, and the Panhellenic Council debated over the accuracy and merits of what is depicted in the film, such as the implications that sorority sisters might shy away from choosing students of color for their ranks and reflect a character that is more party-centric than philanthropic. Chua’s eclectic career has since involved earning a doctorate in comparative literature from the UI, teaching college courses and citizen journalism practices in several countries, producing much-improved programs with social justice aims like MARION’S TRIUMPH: SURVIVING HISTORY’S NIGHTMARE (2003) and CUT: EXPOSING FGM WORLDWIDE (2017), and earning story credits on a pair of SPACE DOGS animated films made in Russia.
