There is probably little for me to add to his particular news contextually; be kind and rewind to my heavy-browed sentiments about the video store from a few years ago when That’s Rentertainment shut its doors in Campustown. Today, the News-Gazette reports that our lone remaining Family Video franchise in Champaign will begin selling off inventory on Monday, November 9, and close for good by year’s end. This comes on the heels of the other area stores in Urbana, Danville, and Rantoul ceasing to do business after Monday, October 19, which I did not know about until now because I missed a prior N-G report on it and my Confidential agents are slipping horribly with feeding me the timely grapevine tips as of late. This means we will enter 2021 without a stand-alone rental emporium, most likely for the first time since they began dotting the strip malls of the United States in the mid-Eighties. You can still check out physical media from Champaign Public Library, Urbana Free Library, and the University of Illinois Library as well as purchase used copies from Exile on Main Street and Disc Replay. You can also patronize Family Video online if you remain a fan, although they don’t offer a streaming option like so many of you value. Seems the days of walking, standing, and crouching to browse for something to watch in a space dedicated to the activity is truly in the past. Will the movies have any public manifestation in the C-U when all the withering ends?
