Coming Soon: Oct-Nov 2007

The following special events and meetings are “coming soon” to the area in October and November. Please support this diverse film programming by attending, spreading the word, and becoming active!

An interesting hodgepodge of events has coalesced before our very eyes, so it might be best if we allow them to speak for themselves! Listen carefully…

Thursday, October 25 through Sunday, October 28, 7 p.m. : Over in the other twin cities, a sort-of twin bill (which would be a real twin bill if the movies played back-to-back on the same day) aims to shock and amaze you! THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959, 10/25-26) features Vincent Price in one of William Castle‘s trademark “gimmick films,” while WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (1951, 10/27-28) offers up spectacular, Oscar-winning destruction thanks to producer George Pal. @ Normal Theater, 209 North St., Normal. Friday, October 26, Midnight: Now, why is it that the most creative All Hallow’s Eve programming is happening an hour away? Hmmmmm? Classic “spook show” itinerary of cartoons, previews, and – yay! – George A. Romero‘s original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968). @ Avon Theatre, 426 N. Water St., Decatur. Free. Click for more

Sunday, October 28, 6 p.m.: The Community Planning Month Film Festival takes a look at worldwide efforts to create sustainable city living that is less reliant on hustle, bustle, and wasted resources. Prototype planning in Chicago (EDEN’S LOST AND FOUND) and Boulder, Colorado (DESIGNING A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD) is featured this weekend; last Sunday’s presentations concentrated on Sao Paolo, Brazil (CITIES) and New York City (CONTESTED STREETS). Sponsored by the City of Urbana and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. @ Urbana City Council Chambers, 400 S. Vine St., Urbana. Free. Click for more

Wednesday, October 31, 8 p.m.: For the second half of the Avon’s own extended Halloween “twin bill,” Skip Huston delivers a theatrical premiere of the Sci-Fi Channel original documentary CHILDREN OF THE GRAVE (2007), a slick-looking exploration of juvenile hauntings. It’s no surprise that Decatur’s favorite “ghost writer,” Troy Taylor, will be on hand for this one, but he also appears in the movie! Joining him for the show will be fellow paranormal investigator/budding TV star Keith Age and CHILDREN filmmakers, the Booth Brothers. @ Avon Theatre, 426 N. Water St., Decatur. $7. Click for more

Friday, November 2, 3:30 p.m.: In an unofficial follow-up event to Home Movie Day (see item: 8/10/07), the workshop “Film Exposed: An Introduction to Basic Film Handling and Inspecting Techniques For the Beginner” will demonstrate how to identify, examine, clean, and store film and sound elements. Instructed by Jimi Jones and sponsored by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. @ Room 131, GSLIS Builiding, UIUC, 501 E. Daniel St., Champaign. $25 (registration fee).
