Coming Soon: April-May 2007

Every now and then, C-U Blogfidential will highlight limited-run screenings in the area which often receive little to no press in traditional news outlets. The following events are “coming soon” in April and May; please support this diverse film programming in our community by attending and spreading the word. Multiplexes and television sets are no substitute for a true cinema experience!

We apologize if a few recent events slipped past us due to our focus on finishing up C-U Confidential (which we’ll get back to in a few paragraphs) but now it’s time to lay down the lowdown on several immenent shows, most of local origin!

The Illini Film & Video club will host their end-of-semester show tomorrow, Sunday, April 22, 1 p.m., in the auditorium of Spurlock Museum, 600 S. Gregory St., Urbana, IL, on the University of Illinois campus. This presentation is a featured event of the Champaign County-wide Boneyard Arts Festival which runs through the end of Sunday afternoon.

A week from today, Saturday, April 28, 11 a.m., R.C. Raycraft‘s INCIDENT AT KICKAPOO CREEK will return for its first C-U screening since 2005 at Boardman’s Art Theatre, 126 W. Church St., Champaign, IL. Raycraft tells CUBlog that he will be on hand to discuss the film, which is in its final form save for one additional interview he hopes to nail during “Ebertfest.” (We’ll let your mind wander as to who might be the interviewee.) KICKAPOO immediately precedes the 1:30 p.m. showing of Michael Wiese‘s THE SACRED SITES OF THE DALAI LAMAS (see item: 3/17/07) at the Art, making for an unusual double bill of independent documentaries with local ties.

One day later, Sunday, April 29, starting at 10 p.m., the one and only Jason Butler returns to his former home-away-from-home, Mike n’ Molly’s, 105 N. Market St., Champaign, IL, to butter us up with WEREWOLF CEMETERY: Episode 2 before unleashing the beast that is WEREWOLF CEMETERY: Episode 3 for the first time anywhere. Weather permitting, the show will take place in the beer garden because, well, that’s just the way it should be. An encore is scheduled for the next evening, Monday, April 30, also at 10 p.m.

Jumping to the following weekend, CNGM Pictures will present an exclusive downstate sneak preview of their movie NORMAL LIFE (see item: 1/6/07) on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal. It will take place Sunday, May 6, and be open to the public; watch the CNGM site for location and time.

And, finally, Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival begins this Wednesday, April 25, and runs through Sunday, April 29, at the Virginia Theatre in downtown Champaign. Wait … you didn’t know? I understand that what you’re really concentrating on is snagging your very own FREE copy of CUZine #1 this coming week, but, c’mon people. Look around! It’s all good.
