Coming Soon: December 2007

The following special events and meetings are “coming soon” to the area in December. Please support this diverse film programming by attending, spreading the word, and becoming active!

We hope you’ve come out of your turkey coma and formulated a plan of action as the gifting season has fallen across the land! Not much cinematic diversion lies ahead as Xmas pursuits occupy us all and Hollywood begins its annual late-year push of, well, everything it can muster, so expect Coming Soon to appear sporadically during the next two months. And now, we highlight some seasonal movie cheer and otherwise recurring motifs:

Saturday, December 1, 1 & 7 p.m.: Revival houses love to dust off Christmas-themed, family-friendly fare at the end of the year so, if such cinematic tidings happen to float your boat (or sled, or sleigh, or whatever…), then Kris Kringle (in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, 1947, 1 p.m.) and Clark Griswold (in NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION, 1989, 7 p.m.) have got your back. @ The Virginia Theatre, 203 W. Park St., Champaign. $3. Click for more

Saturday, December 1 through Sunday, December 23: The “greatest hits” of holiday movie perennials continues 50 miles away: ELF (2003, 12/1-2), WHITE CHRISTMAS (1951, 12/6-9), A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1938, 12/13-14), A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983, 12/15-16), and IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946, 12/20-23). All shows begin at 7 p.m. and, luckily, we posted this just late enough to avoid directing your attention to the past two evenings’ presentations of that horrid HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS thing with Jim Carrey. Bleh. Long live Boris Karloff and Chuck Jones! @ The Normal Theater, 209 North St., Normal. $6/adults, $5/children. Click for more

Monday, December 3 and Monday, December 10, 7:30 p.m.: The Illini Film & Video club will congregate two more times this semester. @ Basement lounge, English Building, UIUC, 608 S. Wright St., Champaign. Free. Click for more

Wednesday, December 5, 7 p.m.: The CU Video Group meets to discuss topics relating to video production. Hosted by Virginia Steffen. @ Rocks, 25 E. Springfield Ave., Champaign. Free. Contact Virginia with questions

Thursday, December 6, 5:30 p.m.: The IPRH Film Series continues with a screening and discussion of THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING (2003), directed by Jill Sprecher and starring Matthew McConaughey and Alan Arkin, and how it relates to the year-long theme of “rupture.” Sponsored by the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities. @ KAM Auditorium (Room 62), Krannert Art Museum, UIUC, 500 E. Peabody Dr., Champaign. Free. Click for more
